In the present knowledge of the Comite Rodin, there is only one other example in bronze of this work, also cast by Alexis Rudier, in the former collection of Antonio Santamarina, Buenos Aires. This bronze sculpture will be included in the forthcoming Catalogue Critique de l'Oeuvre Sculpte d'Auguste Rodin, by the Galerie Brame & Lorenceau under the direction of Jérôme Le Blay with the number 2019-6026B. Provenance: The Marian Sulzberger Heiskell and Andrew Heiskell Collection. François Auguste René Rodin (12 November 1840 – 17 November 1917) was a French sculptor generally considered the founder of modern sculpture. He was schooled traditionally and took a craftsman-like approach to his work. Rodin possessed a unique ability to model a complex, turbulent, and deeply pocketed surface in clay. He is known for such sculptures as The Thinker, The Kiss, The Burghers of Calais, and The Gates of Hell. The Rudier Foundry (Fonderie Rudier) was a foundry run by Alexis Rudier (died 1897) and his son Eugène Rudier (1875-1952). It worked with some of the most notable sculptors of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Auguste Rodin, Antoine Bourdelle, Gustave Miklos, Aristide Maillol and Daumier. Their casts were signed "Alexis RUDIER Fondeur PARIS" Marian Sulzberger Heiskell (1918–2019) was an American newspaper executive, philanthropist and former owner of the New York Times. Andrew Heiskell (1915-2003) was chairman and CEO of Time Inc. (1960–1980), and also known for his philanthropy, for organizations including the New York Public Library. He was President of the Inter American Press Association (1961–1962). He married his third wife, Marian Sulzberger Dryfoos, the widow of New York Times publisher Orvil Dryfoos. Jérôme Le Blay, a specialist of Auguste Rodin, created "The Comité Rodin" in 2004, to study the Sculpted Work of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), to prepare a Catalogue of the Artist's Complete Sculpted Work and to improve the knowledge of private collectors, dealers, auctioneers and institutions on theirs works. A rare opportunity. Serious inquiries only.
