Baltasar Lobo
Baltasar Lobo (1910-1993) born in Cerecinos de Campos (near Zamora, Castilla) and dead in 1993 in Paris, was a Spanish sculptor of the new Paris School. His grandfather being a stonemason, from childhood Baltasar Lobo Casuero leart wood-working in the carpentry of his father. In 1922 he entered the studio of the sculptor Ramón Núñez in Valladolid as an apprentice where he sculpted wooden sculptures of saints for the processions. With a scholarship Lobo continued his training from 1927 at the School of Fine Arts in Madrid, which he considerd as a "cemetery" and he left after three months. His father then joined him in Madrid while he worked at the cemetery making reliefs and heads, and he attended the evening classes of the School of Arts and Crafts, specializing in the direct cutting of wood and marble. Baltasar Lobo then discovered the works of Picasso, Dali, Miró and Gargallo. In 1934 his wife Mercedes Comaposada Guillén, Lucía Sánchez Saornil and Amparo Poch y Gascón founded the journal of libertarian women's organization “Mujeres Libres”, to which he worked as a model and illustrator. Participating in the Spanish war in the Republican camp, his father was killed by a shell while digging trenches around Madrid. Most of his works being destroyed during bombings, Lobo fled in 1939 the Franco regime with survivors of the Catalan army, his wife leaving in the convoy of women. Escaped from the camp of Argelès, sleeping under the bridges of Perpignan, he managed to find her in a camp in thee Ardèche region. When Baltasar Lobo arrived in Paris, he slept again under the bridges and at the Saint-Lazare station, joined by his wife. He went to see Picasso, who was not at home, left him a box of drawings, came back the next day and enjoyed his generous and friendly help. He could then settle in the studio that left Naum Gabo, binding with Henri Laurens and working some years in his garden the marbles that he received. His figuration was then simplified, in the spirit of the works of Constantin Brâncusi, Jean Arp, Henry Moore. Lobo developed an archaic character and continued to accentuate his non-figuration, around the themes of the female nude, Maternity and Bather, inspired by the drawings made, in a tower above the "Blue Flats", during his stays around 1945-1946 in La Ciotat where many Spaniards worked at the shipyard. He met there Brâncusi and the Spanish painters Tàpies, Parra, Xavier Oriach, Pelayo, Palazuelo. Lobo exhibited in the 1950s and the 1960s at the Gallery Villand and Galanis (1957, 1962, 1964, 1966) near painters such as Chastel, Esteve, Gischia, Jacques Lagrange. A retrospective exhibition of Baltasar Lobo's work was presented in 1960 at the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid. Subsequently Lobo was appointed in 1981 an officer of Arts and Letters in France and received in 1984 the National Prize for Plastic Arts in Spain.

The Pleiades-Taygete 1/8 - emotive, nude, female, figurative, bronze statuette
By Richard Tosczak
Located in Bloomfield, ON
The elegant form of a nude female figure is captured in this sculpture by Canadian artist Richard Tosczak. This table-top piece is named after ‘Taygete’ one of the Pleiades--seven sister nature deities (nymphs) found in Greek mythology.
She stands, head bowed, arms clasped around her neck as if in deep thought. Known for his beautiful figurative work, this piece retains the artist’s signature highly textured appearance and rich earthy patina. Tosczak’s pieces are first conceived on paper in quick pen and ink drawings. The spontaneity of this approach is evident in the almost abstract appearance of the sculpture. Edition one of eight.
“What inspires/informs my work? In a word, observation. I notice things…a gesture…an accident.” Richard Tosczak
Born in Belgium, Richard Tosczak studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel...

Solid Bronze Ballet Dancer Sculpture 'Meditation' by Benson Landes
By Benson Landes
Located in Shrewsbury, Shropshire
'Meditation' is a tasteful and demure nude of a ballet dancer. The poise and elegance of the dancer are exquisite!
For Benson Landes, sculpture was most definitely a passion. His oeuvre of cast bronzes is populated with ‘off duty’ ballet dancers, rather wistful women, often caught in moments of solitary repose. Such an obvious appreciation of the grace and elegance of the female form was, no doubt, heightened by 25 years spent in the couture business, which Benson entered at the age of 14. The sculptor admitted that his time as an apprentice at his father’s clothing workroom and factory was given rather reluctantly, as he always harbored desires to become an artist. The young boy’s sense of responsibility was clearly equal to his creativity, though, as Benson knuckled down and learned the family trade.
At the age of 18, however, a 2 year conscription to the RAF provided one of the few opportunities for Benson to experience artistic freedom. The possibilities of otherwise unobtainable materials such as pastels, paper, perspex and plaster of paris fuelled his ingenuity at the base’s well-stocked workshop.
On completion of his RAF service, Benson briefly returned to the clothing factory now owned by his father. After his marriage to Ruth at 21, in an effort to provide for his new wife, Benson decided to set up his own business. Starting with a single sewing machine and tailoress, Benson and Ruth soon expanded the business. By the 1970s they employed over 50 staff and supplied to prestigious stores such as Dickens & Jones and Harrods.
As the decade progressed, however, fashion turned towards less structured, more casual garments; a trend that prompted Benson to retire and spend time with his first love, sculpture. Buoyed by the liberty he enjoyed in his studio, Benson succeeded in selling some of his first pieces of sculpture, a collection of sporting trophies shown at the 1981 Open Golf Championship, to Garrards, the Crown Jewellers. This success quickly brought important contacts and new commissions.
Benson always maintained that being able to work as a sculptor is a unique privilege. Usually in the company of a model, he often worked in the studio against the soothing background of classical music. Indeed, now eminently collectable, Benson’s work provided much comfort after the death of Ruth. Benson said that the things that mattered in life are those of beauty; he truly believed that romance and elegance are necessary shields to what he saw as the sometimes too hurried manner of life today.
Benson sadly passed away in the autumn of 2013.
