From The Soul is a bronze sculpture by Beatriz Gerenstein where she shows a golden-brown, chrysalis-like structure with and a human figure looking outwards from an opening in the nest. The whole sculpture seems to be floating. It is light and heavy at the same time, like a balloon. The cocoon could resemble the space around us, which places boundaries and limits to the entire existence of the human being. It also suggests sensuality, alludes to motherhood and fertility. Perhaps it represents emptiness, nothingness, but also the whole. The cocoon is beautiful, bright and plenty of light but is also broken and torn, like our life is. We see a human figure peeking through an opening. He leans out of the nest, grasping just a glimpse of the universe out there. It is a magical and mysterious figure. What is he looking for? Who does he want to see? Who does he want to talk to? What does he want to tell us? A piece of bronze rope held the sculpture in a delicate balance. Maybe it holds the nest; perhaps it allows our friend to go down into the world or escape from it. "From the Soul" was featured at 17th Guangzhou Art Fair's catalog. Beatriz Gerenstein is a contemporary artist whose body of work explores the daily pleasures, anxieties, and mysteries of the human being.
