Benjamin Turner Kurtz
Nubian Water Boy

circa 1925

About the Item

This wonderful bronze speaks to an important movement in the 1920's toward expression in exotic cultures and to explore not only ethnicities but celebration of that through artistic form. This really began with Orientalist art in the later 19th century but as artists came into the 1920's this was approached with renewed vigor. Artists sought the exotic and combined it with art nouveau use of line and form. Kurtz did a number of works in the vain - both female and male figures. Another sculptress Malvina Hoffman executed her famous studies of Mankind which also were done with a similar aesthetic. Great for shelves and niches or table tops - a work like this brings movement, grace and form to any spot. These were executed by Roman Bronze works and it is stamped with their mark and it is a lifetime cast and even though it is not numbered for an edition this would not have been cast over 12 works and certainly may be less than that.
