Release, 2021 15" x 21" x 5" half torso wall piece - hand formed clay assembled* with altered wood, leather, metal, fabric, paint and found object *assembled with an inner skeleton of brass rods and metal epoxies. The leather on the torso is from an antique porcelain doll. The fabric is from the doll's dress. The base is antique cypress form a porch railing. The hat is leather from a glove. I've been an artist for as long as I can remember, as a child finding comfort and joy in the simple act of creating something purely my own. As I grew up I was determined to find a career path in the arts, earning a Fine Art degree and a masters in Art Education, both from the University of Central Florida. I began a career sharing my passion for creating with young people, enjoying a fifteen year career as an art educator in Florida public schools. I loved teaching, but I also continued to work as an artist, exhibiting in shows and galleries in the Orlando area. In 1996 I left teaching to pursue a full time career as an artist. I never regretted my decision. I missed my students, but I loved the freedom to explore new thoughts and ideas. I had always been interested in functional ceramics, but I began to create new work in figurative sculpture using porcelain assembled with wood and found objects. The figures were rooted by my interest in American primitive sculpture and slowly evolved from smaller pieces mounted in wooden boxes to larger life sized forms. My process involves hand forming porcelain or stoneware clay into lifelike forms or pieces, firing the clay and then assembling it with sanded, altered wood shapes to form the figures, torso and limbs. Once the initial figure is created I embellish it with paper, fiber, metal and found objects to complete the sculpture. My intent is to project emotion and motion, reflecting that long ago joy in creating something purely my own. Art has always been a source of insight, reflection and healing for me. I've displayed my work at many exhibitions during the past 21 years, including Best of Show at seven prestigious art shows around the country. My work has been carried by numerous galleries, including Snyderman Works in Philadelphia, Seager Gray in Mill Valley, CA, and Susan Greenwood Fine Art in Laguna Beach, CA. I currently reside in New Orleans, which has been my home since 2002. In 2014 I opened a gallery in the French Quarter, Lucky Rose Gallery, which exhibits my sculptures and paintings. - Cathy Rose
