About the Item

Bushbuck by Charles DELHOMMEAU (1883-1970) Sculpture with a nuanced reddish-brown patina Signed on the base "Delhommeau" Sand cast France circa 1938 height 27,5 cm base 20,5 x 7,5 cm Cette épreuve, sans marque de fondeur, fut vraisemblablement réalisée avant le contrat du 15 avril 1938 qui liera le sculpteur au fondeur Leblanc-Barbedienne pour l'édition de cette sculpture du Guib. This cast, without any founder's mark, was probably made before the contract of April 15, 1938 which linked the sculptor to the founder Leblanc-Barbedienne for the edition of this sculpture of Bushbuck. Bibliography : "Les Bronzes de Barbedienne. L'oeuvre d'une dynastie de fondeurs", Florence Rionnet, Ed. Arthena, Paris, 2016, p. 302, n°607. Biography : Charles Delhommeau (1883-1970) was a French sculptor. After a brief career as a bust portraitist, he became an animal sculptor. He exhibited for the first time at the Salon of the French Artists in 1904 with a plaster “Chat au feu”. Delhommeau exhibited regularly at the Salon of the National Fine Arts Society, of which he became an associate member in 1913 and a full member in 1932. In 1938, on the recommendation of his sculptor friend Louis de Monard, Delhommeau collaborated with the Sèvres Porcelain Manufacture. Parts making up a centerpiece was delivered to the French government in December 1942. As for his animal subjects observed at length at the Jardin des Plantes and at the Vincennes Zoo, they were the subject of very careful and limited editions.
