About

1,000 piece Museum Quality Collection of Art & Objects from NYC 1939 Worlds Fair. "Riders of the Elements," is the original 7' plaster maquette from the NYC 1939 World's Fair by Chester Beach was enlarged to a 42' tall fountain at the 1939 World's Fair. When the Fair opened in 1939 the heroic 42' foot sculpture stood at the intersection of the Court of Ships and the Avenue of Transportation. Astride its lunging, rearing horses mounted over a cubist cityscape, art deco-stylized men carried ships, planes, cars, and trains symbolizing man's progress in transportation. "Riders" represents hope. This work of art is the embodiment of a moment where everything seemed possible. Like most of the fair's buildings, monuments and outdoor sculptures, it was razed after the fair closed in October 1940. But this original maquette survived. This monumental sculpture is part of our 1,000 piece museum quality collection of works from New York City’s 1939 World's Fair. The collection as a whole is available for sale. Inquiries invited.
