About the Item

A super stylized and marvelously detailed work that epitomizes the playful and imaginative works of the 1920's. Garden and conservatory works were highly in vogue and demand at that time. Well to do spent time in the gardens and they were showcased and shared with visitors as were indoor greenhouses. A work like this today can easily grace an interior as well as they are such formalized works that we now hesitate to put them outdoors. Work has a very lovely patina!!! British 1893-1959 Neptune, 1928 Signed: David Evans 1928 London edge of self-base Marked: Neptune across front of self-base Bronze, lighter brown patina with verdigris 21 3/4 x 7 x 11 inches Modeled shortly after his time at the Prix de Rome, Evans' Neptune reflects a synthesis of classical motifs—shaped by his years of study in Rome—and the modernist principles that were emerging during the 1920s. The sculpture combines the realism of the human form with the sleek, geometric lines and ornamental details typical of the Art Deco style. In this fanciful and stylized interpretation, Evans reimagines the God of the Sea not as a mature deity, but as a youthful figure, playfully astride a school of elegantly rendered, stylized fish. This fusion of classical tradition with modernist aesthetics creates a unique vision, where mythological themes are reinterpreted through the lens of contemporary design. David Evans was a British sculptor and painter known for his versatile works in bronze, marble, wood, and stone, spanning both religious and secular themes. Born in Manchester, he studied at the Manchester School of Art before winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Art (RCA) in 1914, completing his studies after serving in WWI. Evans' career gained momentum after his time at the Royal Academy Schools (1922–1927), where he won the Landseer Prize and the Prix de Rome. His stay at the British School at Rome (1924–1926) significantly influenced his work, leading him to explore more stylized and monumental themes. In 1929, he became sculptor-in-residence at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. During his time in the U.S., he completed major commissions, including works for the Rockefeller Center and St. Thomas's Church in New York. He also participated in the art competitions at the 1932 and 1948 Summer Olympics. His works can be seen in collections such as the National Portrait Gallery in London and the National Museum and Gallery of Wales. A Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and a member of the Art Workers' Guild, he had a lasting impact on both British and American sculpture.
