About the Item

This figurative steel indoor sculpture challenges cultural norms about women. The finely detailed, provocative sculptures of Derya Ozparlak have secured her a unique place in the world of sculptural art. Her iconic work often features human figures forged from steel held aloft by balloons. Here, two female figures—one in a dress, long hair flying clutches a bouquet of shiny red fibreglass balloons and with one hand holds onto another female figure dressed in a suit. Ozparlak’s work explores themes about culture and society. This piece makes a social comment on expectations related to the battle between ‘gender, traditional roles and personal autonomy’ in what is often a male-dominated world. The balloons are symbolic of ‘freedom’ and the idea of breaking free from ‘conformity.’ “(The sculpture)… represents the struggle of a woman who must find her own way within the constraints, expectations, and rigid structures imposed by society. The two figures symbolize both solidarity and internal conflict, reflecting the necessity of confronting these norms in order to move forward.” Derya Ozparlak Derya Ozparlak was born in Turkey and completed a BFA from Anadolu University. She now lives and works in Toronto and is pursuing a second BFA at OCAD University in the area of Experimental Animation. Ozparlak's artworks are held in corporate, private, museum and public collections. Derya Ozparlak has participated in numerous groups, solo exhibitions, art fairs, and symposiums in Canada, France, Sri Lanka, Turkey, the US, Spain, Lebanon, Germany and Italy.

Figures dancing in rings, gold and silver representing yin/yang, masculine/feminine, sun/moon female: 20x18x6" ed/21 male: 22x19x8" ed/21 "Just as the ancients danced to call upon the spirits in nature, we too can dance to find the spirits within ourselves that have long been buried and forgotten." - Anna Halprin ABOUT THE ARTIST: Denny Haskew currently resides in Loveland, Colorado where he is actively engaged in the art industry as a sculptor. He received his degree from the University of Utah, then served two years in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Having spent numerous years as a guide and ski instructor, Denny has learned to love the rivers and mountains of the western states of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, and Utah. After moving to Loveland, a hub of successful working sculptors, he wasted no time in getting monumental sculpture experience through working with renowned sculptors including Fritz White and Kent Ullberg N.A. Since 1987, Denny has created and placed dozens of monumental compositions; spanning the full spectrum of the figurative genre. As a member of the Potawatomi Citizen Nation, it is only natural for his artwork to follow the Native American culture. His art has not been limited to Native American and southwestern subjects, however, as he frequently explores abstract forms placing emphasis on the qualities of the metal and stone used. As a Charter member of the National Sculptors' Guild and being close to other sculptors and the Loveland area foundries has helped him to master all the foundry processes involved in producing a desirable and lasting monumental bronze sculpture. Over 50 major public placements include the Smithsonian Institution, DC.; the Gilcrease Museum, OK; Cerritos, CA; Little Rock, AR; the Shakopee Mdewakanton Dakota Sioux collection, MN, and the Barona Band of Mission Indians...
