About the Item
"Reclining Figure" by Frederick Hart is a figurative female and male figure bronze sculpture with the edition number 54/65.
Frederick Hart was an American sculptor. His is best known for his Three Soldiers statue at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Ex Nihilo (1983) depicting Creation scenes above the doors of the Washington National Cathedral. The sculptor’s bas relief resin, bronze, and stone works conflated a religious figurative sensibility with contemporary processes to create evocative sculpture. Born on June 7, 1943 in Atlanta, GA, Hart’s studies at the University of South Carolina were cut short after his participation in a Civil Rights protest in 1961 attracted the attention of the Ku Klux Klan, causing him to leave for Washington, D.C. There, Hart found solace in the Corcoran School of Art, quickly gravitating to stone carving and winning a design competition for a sculptural facade on the Washington National Cathedral. Notably, Hart pioneered cast resin sculpture late in his career. He died on August 13, 1999 in Baltimore, MD, and was posthumously awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2004.

Frederick Hart
A sculptor and stone cutter in the Classical* style, Frederick Hart was an apprentice at the National Cathedral in Washington DC and there learned about sculpting and stone cutting. Then his big break of public recognition came when he won a competition to design the facade of the Cathedral, which incorporated his thirteen year masterpiece of the Creation, a 21 X 15 foot bas relief*. He also designed Three Soldiers, realistic in style, for the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in DC to contrast with the abstraction of Maya Lin's Vietnam Memorial. Born in Atlanta, Georgia and raised in South Carolina, Frederick Hart was an opponent of most contemporary art, thinking it motivated by political rather than aesthetic reasons. As a proponent of Realism*, he was made an honorary member of The American Society of Classical Realism Guild of Artists. Just before his premature death from lung cancer in 1999, he built his 17,000 square-foot dream home "Chesley," on 250 acres of land in Virginia. This mansion was intended to be an artists' retreat to nourish traditional, classical values and refute modernist* trends that he said allowed anything to be called art. He endured several legal battles including the use of his Three Soldiers on a souvenir without his permission and a lawsuit with Time-Warner over the "demonizing" of his creation scene.

Resting. A bronze sculpture of a resting ballet dancer figure by Benson Landes
By Benson Landes
Located in Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Resting. A bronze sculpture of a resting ballet dancer figure by Benson Landes.
For Benson Landes, sculpture was most definitely a passion. His oeuvre of cast bronzes is populated with ‘off duty’ ballet dancers, rather wistful women, often caught in moments of solitary repose. Such an obvious appreciation of the grace and elegance of the female form was, no doubt, heightened by 25 years spent in the couture business, which Benson entered at the age of 14. The sculptor admitted that his time as an apprentice at his father’s clothing workroom and factory was given rather reluctantly, as he always harbored desires to become an artist. The young boy’s sense of responsibility was clearly equal to his creativity, though, as Benson knuckled down and learned the family trade.
At the age of 18, however, a 2 year conscription to the RAF provided one of the few opportunities for Benson to experience artistic freedom. The possibilities of otherwise unobtainable materials such as pastels, paper, perspex and plaster of paris fuelled his ingenuity at the base’s well-stocked workshop.
On completion of his RAF service, Benson briefly returned to the clothing factory now owned by his father. After his marriage to Ruth at 21, in an effort to provide for his new wife, Benson decided to set up his own business. Starting with a single sewing machine and tailoress, Benson and Ruth soon expanded the business. By the 1970s they employed over 50 staff and supplied to prestigious stores such as Dickens & Jones and Harrods.
As the decade progressed, however, fashion turned towards less structured, more casual garments; a trend that prompted Benson to retire and spend time with his first love, sculpture. Buoyed by the liberty he enjoyed in his studio, Benson succeeded in selling some of his first pieces of sculpture, a collection of sporting trophies...
