About the Item

"Reclining Figure" by Frederick Hart is a figurative female and male figure bronze sculpture with the edition number 54/65. Frederick Hart was an American sculptor. His is best known for his Three Soldiers statue at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Ex Nihilo (1983) depicting Creation scenes above the doors of the Washington National Cathedral. The sculptor’s bas relief resin, bronze, and stone works conflated a religious figurative sensibility with contemporary processes to create evocative sculpture. Born on June 7, 1943 in Atlanta, GA, Hart’s studies at the University of South Carolina were cut short after his participation in a Civil Rights protest in 1961 attracted the attention of the Ku Klux Klan, causing him to leave for Washington, D.C. There, Hart found solace in the Corcoran School of Art, quickly gravitating to stone carving and winning a design competition for a sculptural facade on the Washington National Cathedral. Notably, Hart pioneered cast resin sculpture late in his career. He died on August 13, 1999 in Baltimore, MD, and was posthumously awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2004.
