Wolfgang (Johann Wolfgang) Behl (1918 - 1994) was active/lived in Connecticut, Illinois / Germany. Known for Sculpture and as an architectural carver.
A carver, designer, and teacher, Wolfgang Behl was born in Berlin, Germany where he studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. His teacher was otto Hitzberger, sculptor and architecture carver. I have seen some his work, particularly in carved wood compared to Constantin Brancusi although this one seems way more reminiscent of Alberto Giacometti. In 1939, Behl came to the United States and taught briefly in Pennsylvania at the Perkiomen School and in Rhode Island at the Rhode Island School of Design. There in 1943, he won the Joseph N. Higher - bronze sculpture on ancaster by Alison Bell. She says “I’m drawn to the times when we lived and played in our own imagination, unobserved, scaling fortresses & standing on the ramparts as kings of the castle. Or sometimes just quietly inventing our own worlds.” 53cm x 23cm x 21cm.
Artist Bio: Alison Bell's figurative sculpture captures those innocent childhood moments. Alison Bell has been selling with Wychwood Art Gallery for a number of years and we stock all of her works. Alison Bell sculptor comments "I try to make work that touches the free spirit in us, most often through memories of childhood. I’m drawn to the times when we lived and played in our own imagination, unobserved, scaling fortresses & standing on the ramparts as kings of the castle just quietly inventing our own worlds." "My work is essentially figurative and rooted in my early practice as a portrait sculptor. While the truth of the figure is important to me, my aim is to evoke the moment - the energy, the glee, our curiosity, the tenderness in our hearts." "I work freely & quickly in wax, observing & remembering, and then refine each piece before casting in bronze." "I spent a year at Glasgow School of Art & have a degree in Modern History and Politics from the University of Glasgow. My training came from my time at the Glasgow Sculpture...
