"Cow and Ballerina, " Painted Wood Sculpture signed by Schomer Lichtner
Located in Milwaukee, WI
"Cow and Ballerina" is an original painted wood sculpture by Schomer Lichtner. It features a high-kicking ballerina standing on the back of a cow. The artist signed the piece.
36" x 61" x 26" art
Milwaukee artist, Schomer Lichtner passed away on May 9, 2006 at the age of 101. He continued to amaze and create with his whimsical paintings of ballerinas and cows. He and his late wife Ruth Grotenrath, both well-known Wisconsin artists, began their prolific careers as muralists for WPA projects, primarily post offices.
Schomer Lichtner was well known for his whimsical cows and ballerinas, such as his "Ballerina Dancing on Cow" sculpture below. The late James Auer, art critic for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel referred to Lichtner as the artist laureate of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was the official artist of the Milwaukee Ballet.
Lichtner also painted murals for industry and private clients. Schomer was a printmaker and produced block prints, lithographs, and serigraph prints. His casein (paint made from dairy products) and acrylic paintings are of the rural Wisconsin landscape and farm animals. He became interested in cows when he and Ruth spent summers near Holy Hill in Washington County.
According to David Gordon, director of the Milwaukee Art Museum, Schomer Lichtner had a tremendous joie de vivre, " joy of life," and expressed it in his art.
Schomer Lichtner was nationally known for his whimsical paintings and sculptures of black- and white-patterned Holstein cows...

Corneille, one of the founders of the COBRA group, has passed away. He died in Paris on Sunday, 5 September 2010 aged 88 years. Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo was born in 1922 in Liège, Belgium, to Dutch parents. After leaving school, he studied drawing at the Academy of Arts in Amsterdam from 1940 to 1943. As a painter, however, he was an autodidact. His first exhibition was in 1946 in Groningen in the Netherlands, together with artists from the Dutch experimental group, Reflex. Corneille first visited Paris in 1946 and felt immediately at home in the art metropolis. Together with Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Dotremont and Constant, he founded the COBRA group in Paris 1948. Many other artists, poets and architects later joined the group, including the Swedish artists C-O Hultén, Max Walter Svanberg and Anders Österlin. The works of Paul Klee and Joan Miró exerted a strong influence on Corneille and, like them, he too was inspired by African culture, with which he became well acquainted during several journeys to Africa. Initially his art was non-figurative, but he gradually turned to painting fantasy landscapes in warm tones, frequently characterised by symbiotic representations of female figures and birds. The woman represents beauty and voluptuousness, while the bird symbolises freedom and strength. Since his debut in Groningen more than half a century ago, Corneille has taken part in hundreds of exhibitions at different galleries and is represented in museums all over the world. Led by a fascination for Corneille and the joie de vivre of his paintings, our father, Siwert Bergström, visited the artist in Paris in 1976, where the two of them met in a sidewalk café by the Rue de Clignancourt. Corneille promised to produce a sequence of engravings for Siwert’s gallery, then called Galleri Kända Målare and situated in Jönköping. This marked the beginning of a fruitful friendship and a close working relationship. We were 14 and 12 years old respectively when Corneille first exhibited at the gallery on Bredgränd in Jönköping in 1978. Our memory of that first meeting with him is of a kindly man with a violet-coloured scarf and peering eyes whose penetrating gaze testified to the greatness of the human being behind them. In the years to come he would often visit us in our home and, as our proficiency in foreign languages improved, he was able to share with us his memories and his recollections of meetings with the great modern masters − Picasso, Chagall and Miró to name but three. One anecdote that made a great impression on us dated from his years as a poor, hungry young artist in Amsterdam in the late 1940s, when the COBRA Group was just beginning to take shape. Karel Appel, with whom he shared a studio, had succeeded in selling a painting and had raced off to buy a huge chunk of steak which he subsequently cooked and ate up in front of Corneille – without offering him the tiniest morsel! He would never forget that story. And nor will we! It was Corneille who encouraged our father to move the gallery to Stora Nygatan in Malmö in 1984. Together they produced a large number of graphic editions and art books together, which led to numerous visits and exhibitions over the course of the years. Corneille became one of the cornerstones on which the gallery’s success was built and is – metaphorically speaking, at least – part of the very fabric of our business and the building. In accordance with his wishes, Corneille will be laid to rest beside his fellow countryman and predecessor, the great master, Vincent van Gogh: two artists from totally different eras, with different life histories behind them, who are nevertheless sure to discover that they share a great deal in common. We will miss the slight, bearded gentleman with the peering gaze and the violet neck-scarf, but his spirit lives on in his brightly coloured and highly imaginative paintings. Corneille played a big part in our upbringing and our education into the world of art. He is an important representative of his age, whose work still continues to spread joy and inspiration. We are convinced that he has earned his rightful place in the art history of our time – as an artist who truly knew how to celebrate womanhood, joy and all that is beautiful in life. Dimensions: 29" x 11" x 10"
Provenance: Kirk Gallery New York City
Extreme line detail with various base colors, black green yellow gold and red with silver metallic and black paint. Tagged Throughout by LAII New York City graffiti artist LA II (a.k.a. Angel Ortiz)
Angel Ortiz (born 1967), known publicly as LA II or LA2 (meaning "Little Angel"), is an American graffiti artist and visual artist of Puerto Rican descent from the Lower East Side who is known for his collaborations with Keith Haring. Ortiz's contributions to Haring's work, including his trademark graffiti infill squiggles, have notably been obscured by the art establishment, which has prompted Ortiz's supporters, including artist, photographer, and videographer Clayton Patterson, to publicly uplift Ortiz's work and ask for credit to be given. Ortiz has been criminalized, arrested, and incarcerated several times for various offenses throughout his life. Ortiz is represented by Lawrence Fine Art, which has galleries in Los Angeles and East Hampton.
Ortiz has created graffiti art since at the age of ten. Starting in the mid-1970s, he tagged in New York's Lower East Side under the moniker LA2. At the age of thirteen, his subway tags caught the attention of Keith Haring in 1980. Haring was reportedly inspired by Ortiz's artistry and the two began collaborating. At the age of sixteen, Ortiz was in contact with Jean Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. In 1982, Ortiz and Haring collaborated for an exhibition at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York. His work is associated with the Outsider street art movement and the Pop Art movement.
In a 1992 biography on Haring's life, Haring stated "We just immediately hit it off. It’s as if we’d known each other all our lives. He’s like my little brother." Kenny Scharf, artist and friend of Haring's, recalled "Keith treated him as a true collaborator; he didn’t treat him like some little kid, which he actually was, really. He respected him and gave him half of whatever they collaborated on.” Ortiz confirmed that he was paid for his work during Haring's lifetime. However, Ortiz stopped receiving payment from Haring's estate following his death. According to scholar Ricardo Montez, the Haring Foundation has "since made strides to rectify LA2’s erasure." LA II is for Haring what Jean-Michel Basquiat was for Andy Warhol. Today LA II is considered an iconic graffiti artist, being unearthed from the massive power of Keith Haring’s body of work. LA II’s role role...
