Manolo Hugue women. Llovera, bronze
Located in CORAL GABLES - MIAMI, FL
Llovera, bronze
Manuel Martínez Hugué (Barcelona, 1872-Caldas de Montbui, 1945) was a Spanish painter and sculptor, representative of the Catalan Noucentisme of the early 20th century. His work can be summarized as a synthesis of classicism and primitivism within modernity. He is widely cited under the colloquial name of Manolo. Born in Barcelona, his bohemian and marginal life and his visits to the Els Quatre Gats café in Barcelona earned him the friendship of Santiago Rusiñol, Joaquín Mir, Isidro Nonell and Pablo Picasso, among other artists. In 1900 he moved to Paris, where he lived for ten years. There he met Jean Moréas and Guillaume Apollinaire, in addition to working on the design of jewelry and small pieces of sculpture, among which La Llobera (1911, Barcelona, Museum of Modern Art, and Young Seated (1913, Paris, Center Georges Pompidou)).
Driven by a dealer, Hugué moved to Céret in 1910, where he brought together a diverse group of artists, including Juan Gris, Joaquín Sunyer...

MORDECHAI AVNIEL
Minsk, Belarus, b. 1900, d. 1989
Mordecai Dickstein (later Avniel) was born in 1900 in Minsk, present-day Belarus. He studied fine arts in Yekaterinburg, Russia (1913–19) and at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem (1923). Avniel immigrated to Palestine in 1921 where he first worked as a pioneer in citrus plantations near Petah Tikva. In 1923, at the urging of Boris Schatz, he went to Jerusalem to further his art studies at Bezalel. He later taught painting and sculpture at the school, and served a term as director of the Small Sculpture Section of the Sculpture Department (1924–28). From 1935 on, Avniel lived in Haifa. Avniel was also a lawyer and a founding partner of the Haifa firm Avniel, Salomon & Company.
Avniel regularly showed his work in group exhibitions of the Painters and Sculptors' Association of Israel. He was awarded the Herman Struck Prize (1952), Tenth Anniversary Prize for Watercolours, Ramat Gan (1958), Histadrut Prize (1961), and First Prize Haifa Municipality (1977). He represented Israel at the 1958 Venice Biennale and the 1962 International Art Seminar at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Avniel was a member of the Artists' Colony in Safed and maintained a studio on Mount Carmel.
Mordechai Avniel is best known for his deft and singular landscape work.
His works are held in numerous museums and collections both in Israel and abroad, including the Metropolitan Museum, New York and the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, PA. Avniel's manipulations of light and colour share much with those of compatriot artists Shimshon Holzman and Joseph Kossonogi.

Polychromed ceramic, c. 1930-1
Signed with the artist's initials: VS recto
Very rare, only a few produced prior to the closure of Cowan Pottery
Format: Round ceramic plate, 11 1/4 inches
Designed by the artist while working for Cowan Pottery in 1930. One of Cowan's clients, an interior designer, requested plates decorated with different outdoor activities. Others in the series included "Swimming," "Tennis," "Polo," and "The Hunt."
According to Henry Adams, the number of examples created was very limited due to the closing of Cowan Pottery in 1931. Very rare
Condition: Good, with the usual craquelure of the glazes used.
Note: Industrial design democratizes high style, and Mr. Schreckengost was widely considered among the most democratic industrial designers. He made, quite literally, the stuff of life — things found routinely in homes, backyards and garages in this country and around the world. He designed bicycles for Sears and everyday china for American Limoges. He designed children’s toys and pedal cars; flashlights, furniture and fans; lawn chairs, lawn mowers and golf carts; baby walkers and artificial limbs.
In 2006 Mr. Schreckengost was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the country’s highest cultural honor. His work is in the permanent collection of major museums, including the Renwick Gallery, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago.
Mr. Schreckengost belonged to the first great generation of American industrial designers, which included luminaries like Russel Wright, Norman Bel Geddes and Raymond Loewy.

Erinnerungen an einen Mord
Located in Wien, 9
Curt Stenvert was an Austrian avant-garde artist who initially worked as a painter. His artistic practice gradually expanded to include cinematic works and object art. His works are still internationally acclaimed today.
He received his artistic training through his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He studied there with Albert Paris Gütersloh and Fritz Wotruba, which enabled him to deal with aspects of movement and perspective. This resulted in his aluminium plexiglass sculptures. His cinematic works were also influenced by his preoccupation with movement. Movement became a central motif in his works. Stenvert introduces the viewer to the biological, psychological, sociological and philosophical conditions of human existence. He developed experimental, feature-length and documentary films, which won international awards. He had solo museum exhibitions in Sweden, Italy and Germany and took part in the 1966 Venice Biennale. The social aspect preoccupied Stenvert throughout and he translated his impressions and thoughts of student unrest, social protests...

As Parisian artists, they spent long moments in Vendée region, in their Mollin property, or in Saint-Jean-de-Monts, city in which one can see their last monumental work: "The Sea Birds". Their works were sculptures, monuments or fountains of Art Deco or Cubist inspiration. They also realized around 1920 interior fittings for villas.

Materials: Cuban wood (mahogany?)
Dimensions 23 X 4 X 4 inches
Label affixed to underside: National Registry of Cultural Assets of the Republic of Cuba Ministry of Culture.
Provenance: Art Master Collection, Miami, Florida.
Florencio Gelabert, with a style reminiscent of Art Deco and Art Nouveau in a Latin American Expressionist stylization. Carved wood sculpture. Depicts a modernist stylized form of a man in a streamline moderne style.
José Florencio Gelabert Pérez (Caibarien, 1904 - Havana, 1995) Cuban musician, sculptor, draftsman and teacher. He graduated from the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts in 1934. He received numerous awards, mentions and recognitions in Fine Arts Halls and Circles. His works are in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts. Florencio Gelabert is a renowned sculptor, who made more than twenty solo exhibitions beginning in 1929, several in the National Museum of Fine Arts, and participated in more than thirty collectives in Cuba, Spain and Brazil, the latter in the Sao Paulo Biennial. he traveled from Caibarién to Santa Clara in 1928 to audition to enter the famous San Alejandro Fine Arts School in Havana. He obtained one of the five vacancies. Already in the Cuban capital, he combined fine arts and music. When he graduated, he became a professor in San Alejandro and the academy’s principal in 1960.
With a calling common to wood sculptors –which began with his primary school carving carpentry classes and the active life of his home town’s shipyards, his chisels and gouges feverishly turned mahogany, “ácana” and ebony into female heads with black African features dating back to 1930.
In 1938 he used his savings to explore Europe: France (Paris, Marseilles), Italy (Naples, Rome, Florence, and Venice), Belgium (Malina). His encounter with the works by Aristide Maillol, Auguste Rodin, Ossip Zadkine, Constantin Brancusi and even with Wifredo Lam, who was also born in another Cuban coastal area, Sagua la Grande, and his encounter with the nude marble David sculpture...

Claude-Levy Cast Iron Sculpture of Flora, Dated 1925
Located in New York, NY
Claude-Lévy, 1895 – 1942
Alice Nikitina in the role of Flora, from the Dukelsky/Braque production of the ballet Zephyr & Flore at the Ballets Russes, 1925
Cast Stone
Signed and dated: Claude-Levy 1925 on rear face of self-base.
The present sculpture is as rare as it is delightful. Mademoiselle Claude-Levy, as the
catalogues of the period list her, was one of the truly original talents of the Art Deco period. Painter, architect, decorator, and sculptor, she was a friend of the Parisian, Modernist sculptors, Chana Orloff, Henri Laurens and the Martel brothers, to whom her work was often compared. The ingenuity of her models brought her great critical acclaim, but she seems to have stopped producing in the early 1930s. Her output, although fine, is rare. Claude-Levy’s gentle Cubism might be better described as Purism in sculpture. It is characterized by simplified surfaces, rounded (as opposed to angular) forms, and smooth, lustrous surfaces. The Purist movement included the painters Léger, Ozenfant and Le Corbusier in its ranks.
Claude-Lévy, along with other artists of the avant- garde living in the Gallic capital (Czaky, Zadkine, Archipenko, Lipchitz, Lambert Rucki Miklos, Nadelman, Vörös, Orloff) helped to develop a collective twentieth century figurative sculptural idiom that exploited the daring and rich possibilities of geometric abstraction.
The present work is Claude-Lévy’s Commedia dell’Arte figures inspired by the Stravinsky/Picasso Ballet...

A Large Scale, Beautifully Sculpted and Patinated Batcham Cameroon Mask.
Located in Cotignac, FR
A large scale and beautifully carved wooden ceremonial mask from Cameroon. There are traces of colour and decoration to the surface and the mask has a magnificent patina giving it a wonderful presence as a sculptural object.
The Batcham Mask or simply the Batcham originated in western Cameroon although its name refers to the place where it was first found: Batcham.
This is a ceremonial mask from the Bamileke culture in the western Grasslands of Cameroon. This tall crest (76 cm in height) has clearly defined features, a powerful yet calm visage, sharply chiselled diamond and triangular furrows, and nearly perfect symmetry. Such painstaking craftsmanship underscores the sophistication and control of the sculptor in preparing this ceremonial piece.
It shares the elements of Batcham masks including:
The general morphology is built on two axes: a symmetrical vertical axis with chiseled furrows, stylized eyes, lips, nostrils, mouth and teeth; a horizontal axis presenting swollen cheeks, an ovular mouth showing multiple teeth, and triangular ears supported on a hollow cylindrical base. One interpretation is that the masks depict a hippopotamus emerging from watery depths, conveying nature’s power conferred to enthroned royalty.
The Batcham mask represents the pi, or double animal of a great dignitary of the kingdom. It was used by a great dignitary of the Msop society who intervened only on rare occasions: during the funeral and enthronement of the king and the nine notables, and to perform the Royal Tso dance, elephant dance...

Lucite Flower by Herb Elsky- 1983
Located in Pasadena, CA
This rare Lucite resin sculpture, bearing the signature of Herb Elsky and dated 1983 on its base, portrays a flower and its stem intricately carved within two acrylic blocks joined together. It could be a phantasmal sunflower in the color of crystal. The light passes through, and flows through the flower, the shape of its head opening to the sky, its central bud, the back of its petals embellished by veins, and its foot on which fine stem details are engraved.
The back of the flower boasts a rougher texture.
Depending on the angle of view, the different sources of light, sun, or electrical light the flower no longer gives itself only in this transparency close to crystal but becomes tinged with yellows, or red like the sofa behind it. It is fascinating!
Herb Elsky is an artist who, for several decades specialized in abstract visual art, but in more recent years combining sight and sound...
