R. Clark Ellis
Glance Dance III - tall, abstracted figures, aluminum outdoor sculpture

2023

About the Item

Two minimalist human-like forms appear to be dancing—their elongated shapes entwined; their ‘faces’ glancing towards one another. This is Robert Clarke-Ellis’s work. His abstract sculptures forged from steel are often painted in bright colours—this one in red and royal blue. His playful work always embodies a serious message. “The interaction (internal dialogue) between the sculpture and the spectator becomes at once personal and universal. This becomes the beginning for a new dialogue, event, or memory.” Clarke Ellis Robert Clarke Ellis holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He began his career as a Sculpture Technician/ Instructor at NSCAD before completing a B.Ed. from Queen’s University. Ellis had a successful career as a high school Art and Welding teacher. He has been able to sculpt full time in his own studio for several years. Ellis’ work integrates abstract figures that reference common events and/or conversations designed to become a starting point for the viewer’s reflection. His work has been exhibited and held in private collections in Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Michigan.
