About the Item
Tropical Totem is a vibrant sculptural homage to the totem pole, brought to life through layers of handworked fabric and embellishment. Block-printed with lush florals and detailed with Kantha-style quilting from Rajasthan, the piece is further encrusted with sequins and glass beads - each element sewn by hand over the course of months to create a richly textured surface that radiates color and care.
Rien Bekkers is one of the Netherlands’ most respected costume designers, with over forty years of work for leading theatre, opera, ballet, and film companies across the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, including Toneelgroep Amsterdam and the Nederlandse Opera. Drawing on his deep knowledge of historical garments and love of craftsmanship, he creates sculptural “costume objects” — freestanding pieces that reimagine period dress as monumental, imaginative artworks. Now shifting focus from stage to studio, Bekkers combines his theatrical design expertise with sculptural ambition, positioning his latest works as timeless explorations of form, material and fantasy.
