N'Tadi King - Zaire, cothe stone sculpture

circa 1800-1850

About

This sculpture was created out of cothe stone to represent the king of the N'Tadi tribe in Zaire. This tribe is now called Pende. The sculpture stands 15 1/2" x 6" x 5 1/2". The Pende people are an ethnic group in the south-western Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Pende speak their own language (Kipende) and are particularly known for their artistic work, which is complex and includes traditional masks, associated with initiation rituals.
