About the Item

Pair of French Neoclassical gilded cast iron sculptures depicting Melpomene, the muse of Tragedy, with the attribute of the sword, and Erato, the muse of love poetry, with the attribute of the lyre. Art foundry, first half of the 19th century. Our sculptures are part of the early artistic cast-iron production, strongly linked to neoclassical models. Their construction is typical of models from the first half of the 19th century: they are hollowed out on the inside and bear screws and pins used precisely at that time; they are also gilded, a rare feature, produced almost certainly on commission for a private client. They are French but come from Italy, from a splendid Art Nouveau villa located in the center of Montecatini Terme, a Tuscan town that arose during the Art Nouveau period and is world famous for its architecture and thermal baths. They were found with a cloth-covered wooden base; the customer can decide whether to purchase them alone or with the base. SOME HISTORY: Artistic fusion, born in the early 19th century, reached its peak in the late 19th century. In the early 19th century, for reasons of cost, the quality of the bronzes deteriorated. And the lost wax technique, also difficult and expensive for large pieces, was joined by sand casting. The 19th century became, thus, the century of iron: blast furnaces increased in capacity as steelmakers worked to improve the quality of products: pig iron, soft iron, and steel. It would have to wait until the late 1820s to see the first production of ornamental cast iron: Christophe François Calla's research focused on techniques to facilitate the casting of cast iron (to recover the quality attributed to bronze), and on the advice of his friend Hittorff, an innovative architect, he made his first ornamental casts. At the same time, Jean-Pierre-Victor André (1790-1851), a foundry manager and merchant, invested in the market for cast iron equipment and ornaments-this was the time when Paris was undergoing renovation and reconstruction. In 1836 he established his foundry (J.P.V. André), the future Val d'Osne, in the Haute-Marne, and quickly became the most important art foundry in France, distributed worldwide. Cast iron street furniture, a symbol of the union of Art and Industry, the kiosks and ornaments of the Underground, the Wallace fountains, the Morris columns, and the Vespasiennes , are examples of a production that would revolutionize urban planning and export a French art of living around the world.
