About the Item
A portrait head of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, carved in Carrara marble, with deeply cut curls and detailed classical roman accents in the hair and in the shave; the carefully sculpted eyes with the pupil and iris clearly highlighted give the portrait a reflective attitude and character typical of the figure of Marcus Aurelius..
The sculpture stands on a two orders profiled specimen veined marble, knew as Fior di Pesco.
Marcus Aurelius was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 and, as a philosopher, the last significant representative of the younger Stoic movement. He called himself Marcus Aurelius Antonius Augustus. In the last decade of his life, he wrote the "Meditations," which presented him to posterity as a philosopher-emperor and are sometimes considered part of world literature.
