About the Item
Extraordinary collection of 12 gilded copper plaques with glass paste eyes, originating in Limoges, France, and dating from the early 13th century. These fine plaques, each about six inches high, were part of the decoration of a reliquary or liturgical casket, a typical devotional object in medieval Limousin art.
The figures depict Apostles, Saints, and Church Fathers, recognizable by their solemn posture, expressive faces, and the presence of iconographic attributes such as books and scrolls. The elegant chiseling and gilding enhance the artistic quality of these reliefs, which testify to the mastery of Limousin goldsmiths. The fixing holes indicate their original application function on a prestige artifact.
An excellent example of medieval sacred art, this series represents a rare and valuable piece for collectors and scholars of liturgical objects.
