Vitaliano Marchini
Ardito (Portrait of a Man)

1919

About the Item

Vitaliano Marchini (Melegnano 1888 - 1971), Ardito (Portrait of a Man), 1919 Carrara marble sculpture 43 x 26 x 15 cm signed on the right on the base: V. MARCHINI Exhibitions: Palazzo Cucchiari, Novecento a Carrara. Artistic adventures between the two wars, exhibition curated by Massimo Bertozzi, Carrara, June 24-October 29, 2023. Bibliography: Twentieth Century in Carrara. Artistic Adventures between the Two Wars, catalog of the exhibition at Palazzo Cucchiari, Carrara, June 24-October 29, 2023, p. 117. Ardito is a masterful piece of evidence by sculptor Vitaliano Marchini, a white marble belonging to the Regazzoni collection dated 1919, remembered as one of the artist's most remarkable works in the affectionate tribute paid to him by the local newspaper "Il Melegnanese"(1) in the aftermath of his death. The title may refer to the "arditi," the valiant infantry corps of the Royal Italian Army active in World War I, during which Marchini had enlisted first in the 7th Infantry Regiment and then in the Alpini. Ardito is performed in the period when Marchini is fully aware of his own expressive possibilities. Long gone are the years of study - carried out one can say self-taught - and of the strenuous beginnings when, after being a store boy at Luigi Panzeri's studio, he had timidly begun in the first decade of the twentieth century to take part in the permanente exhibitions. Noted by critics since his debut exhibition in 1906, he had achieved his first successes at the Brera National Exhibition in 1910 with Prime fatiche, winning the Tantardini Prize, and then, in 1912(2), again at Brera, with the bronze group Piccola Madre, with which he won the Fumagalli Prize for sculpture. Dedicated to the highly refined style of Adolfo Wildt (Milan, 1868-1931), fascinated by the synthetic, smooth forms and sharp, defined lines, in this sculpture Marchini shows that he also, and above all, learned from the Milanese sculptor that quest for the psychological effect of the subject, so well expressed also in the Sick Child, exhibited at the 12th Venice Biennale in 1920, coeval with the portrait in question.

Unafraid to explore uncomfortable territories, the artist mines from a range of sources to create hybrid creatures that are often symbolic of man’s psychological condition in an angst-ridden zeitgeist. In exploring issues of identity and violence, Bhatt’s research led her to the beginnings of mankind. Most ancient creation...
