In “DOWNSIDE UP,” Henk Jan Sanderman playfully reverses expectations by presenting a panda caught mid-handstand, legs in the air, clinging to a vertical grey beam. The painted porcelain on canvas medium adds a tactile dimensionality, making the panda appear as though it is tumbling out of the surface itself.
Sanderman’s style thrives on this mixture of humour, abstraction, and figurative storytelling. By combining the sculptural weight of porcelain with the flat expanse of canvas, he creates a dialogue between two and three dimensions. The panda’s expressive form, whimsical yet grounded, invites viewers to embrace spontaneity and see the world from a different angle.
The palette remains intentionally minimal: deep black and crisp white against neutral grey and pale blue. This simplicity allows the viewer to focus on the narrative of the pose. The lighthearted composition of “DOWNSIDE UP” resonates with themes of play, risk, and the beauty of looking at life upside down.
Artist biography:
Painter/sculptor Henk Jan Sanderman (1975), born in the Netherlands, currently lives and works in a small town in the middle of Holland. In his studio he renders oil paintings, as well as casting sculptures in porcelain and bronze. The artist’s work defines itself as humorous realism, conveying objects and various subject matter in great detail against a black and white background. In the same hyper-realistic style as his paintings, Henk Jan creates sculptures and wall artwork imbued with impressive life-like accuracy.
His main focus is humorous hyperrealism painting where he sets his subject matter against a white or black background, allowing more space for interaction whilst demonstrating and emphasising intense attention to detail. The artist’s works have an endearing ambience, influenced with their light-hearted aspects. Current works demonstrative innovative merging of the canvas and sculpture, providing a contemporary body of installations.
His works has been featured at Palet magazine, Atelier magazine, Coda museum, Stadsmuseum Harderwijk and museum De Fundatie.
In 2014 Henk Jan participated in the television program "Sterren op het Doek" and created a portrait of Seth Gaaikema. In 2015, he was asked to return for the final season of "Sterren op het Doek", due to being one of the best artists of the past nine seasons.

Henk Jan Sanderman is a painter from the Netherlands. After 12 years of marketing experience in a commercial environment, Sanderman changed courses and began teaching and practicing painting full time. His ideal combination of social interaction and creation, a true Master Painter. Portraits of Sanderman were already on display in Palet magazine, Atelier magazine, Coda Museum, Stadsmuseum Harderwijk and Museum De Fundatie. In 2014, Sanderman was a participant in the television program Sterren op het Doek and made a portrait of Seth Gaaikema. In 2015, he was asked for the final season of Sterren op het Doek with Omroep MAX returning the best artists of the past nine seasons. Sanderman was allowed to make a portrait of Ria Bremer, and she eventually chose the portrait painting that Sanderman had made. After the experience he gained in making portrait paintings in the master of very realistic painting, he focused on making something close to his heart, humorous work. Sanderman’s work is Humorous Hyperrealism, in which he sets out his objects in great detail against a black and white background.
