About the Item

"Discovery 2017-1" by Kug Kyung Oh Medium: Bronze Edition: 3 of 6 Dimensions: 29 x 29 x 155 cm / 11.4 x 11.4 x 61 in Year: 2011 "Discovery 2017-1" by Kug Kyung Oh stands as a testament to the power of material transformation. Crafted in bronze, this towering sculpture seems to defy time, its surface bearing the marks of erosion, as if shaped by the elements over centuries. The elongated form, partially fragmented, creates a sense of both strength and fragility—an abstracted figure emerging from or dissolving into the space around it. • An Exploration of Presence and Absence – The interplay between volume and void gives the sculpture an ethereal quality, allowing light to interact with the negative spaces in unexpected ways. • Intricate Bronze Surface – The heavily textured surface, resembling weathered wood or ancient ruins, enhances the sculpture’s organic and almost archaeological presence. • Limited Edition – One of only six in existence, ensuring its rarity and artistic significance. Kug Kyung Oh is celebrated for his ability to infuse sculpture with a sense of time’s passage. Discovery 2017-1 is an evocative reflection on impermanence and endurance, making it particularly compelling for collectors drawn to works that convey both materiality and emotion. Its towering form gives it a commanding presence, ideal for spaces that invite contemplation. "Discovery 2017-1" is more than a sculpture—it is an encounter with time, form, and the poetic nature of material.

That Interim of Purpose
By Michael O'Keefe

The sculpture is painted cast plaster. The dimensions are for the painted cast plaster. The black base dimensions are 2 x 10 x 10 inches. About this body of work: “Everybody has that feeling when they look at a work of art and it’s right, that sudden familiarity, a sort of...recognition, as though they were creating it themselves, as though it were being created through them while they look at it or listen to it...” ―William Gaddis, "The Recognitions" “A great deal of my recent work was made during a time when I was reading the great American novel by William Gaddis, "The Recognitions," the most demanding book I’ve ever read. Along the way, I extracted sentence fragments that interested me and I pieced them together to make the titles for the last three years of my work. So, my recent work is linked to Gaddis’ novel through the titles, but also in the theme of “recognition,” which speaks to the nature of my work. I feel my way through various processes until I recognize a possibility―a possibility that is promising in terms of visual dynamics but also in terms of giving a body to some part of my experience. It is my hope that the viewer is compelled to recognize some part of themselves reflected in the work.” —Michael O’Keefe Michael O’Keefe earned his MFA from SMU and currently teaches at The O’Keefe Studio Center in Richardson, Texas. This sculpture was included in "Recognitions," his fifth solo exhibition at Valley House...

Splash
By Robert Cook
Located in Greenwich, CT
Robert Cook’s Splash sculpture draws inspiration from the iconic photograph of a drop of milk creating a circle and splash in a pool of milk. This fleeting moment of suspended motion sparked Cook’s exploration of how to capture such dynamic energy in a static form. Robert Cook was a great American sculptor and his works are in many museums and his iconic Dinoseras piece commands a spot on the street of New York at 51st Street. Important to note with this work that it is unique and there are no other casts. Cook sculpted in wax and when he cast this destroyed the wax and there was no mould. Very few sculptors work in this manner and it speaks to a very pure and altruistic form of sculpture. If perhaps he had been more commercially minded he would have done large editions but instead he valued singularity as in nature. In Splash, Cook freezes a moment of kinetic energy, capturing the elegant tension between impact and expansion. The sculpture embodies both grace and chaos, with a fluidity that suggests movement at the very instant it’s frozen in time. Cook’s mastery of his medium allows this dynamic moment to be immortalized in bronze, creating a powerful and emotional resonance that transcends the physical form, making Splash both a formal and philosophical exploration of time, space, and motion.
