Born and raised in New York City I spent my early years haunting some of the world's finest museums. The American Museum of Natural History in particular has had a great influence on my art. In the early 1970s I moved to Oakland, California to study textiles at The California College of Arts and Crafts. I graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
In 1978 I moved to San Diego, California. I spent the next several years focusing on exploring the use of beadwork on pine needle baskets. Through the years sculptural seed beadwork has become central to my work. The following years were spent exploring sculptural peyote stitch over armatures and as jewelry pieces. I have been collaborating with my husband, Greg Hanson a glass artist. After living in Portland, Oregon for eight years we have recently moved to sunny Tucson, AZ
Working with Gregory's glass, a palette of seed beads, semiprecious and antique beads in assorted sizes and shaps I begin to make spontaneous choices
that evolve into a biomorphic synthesis of colors and textures. I am fascinated with the way the different beads play against each other, allowing me to create jeweled encrustations influenced by primitive and organic forms mainly found in the ocean. The pieces are very organic and seem to have a life of their own.
My work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. Among the venues my work has been exhibited at are: The Museum of Art and Design, New York City, The Ohio Craft Museum, Columbus, Ohio: and The Musee National es Arts et Tradition Populaires, Paris, France.

- Monumental Covered Jar #2By Mariko Brown HarkinLocated in Kansas City, MOTitle : Covered Jar Materials : Terracotta, white gold luster Date : 2016 Dimensions : 18.5 x 8.5 x 8.5 inches Description : wheel thrown and altered terracotta, cone 04 oxidation, glazes and luster COA provided Mariko Brown Harkin about her work: "My fascination with pottery comes from my desire to make art and to produce something that is not only functional but visually appealing. Porcelain allows me stretch and shape the clay in any way I choose and offers a blank canvas for my floral imagery and luscious, rich glazes to blend. The forms I create are tight and precise with a sense of restricted volume. I use bands around the form to constrict specific areas of each piece, while at the same time creating space for the volume and fullness to escape. The bands create registers to frame my drawings and paintings of floral imagery. The way I combine surface and form is inspired by Ming Dynasty porcelain...Category
