Bronze sculpture of an elegant young ballet dancer by Benson Landes 'Hammock'
Located in Shrewsbury, Shropshire
For Benson Landes, sculpture was most definitely a passion. His oeuvre of cast bronzes is populated with ‘off duty’ ballet dancers, rather wistful women, often caught in moments of solitary repose. Such an obvious appreciation of the grace and elegance of the female form was, no doubt, heightened by 25 years spent in the couture business, which Benson entered at the age of 14. The sculptor admitted that his time as an apprentice at his father’s clothing workroom and factory was given rather reluctantly, as he always harbored desires to become an artist. The young boy’s sense of responsibility was clearly equal to his creativity, though, as Benson knuckled down and learned the family trade.
At the age of 18, however, a 2 year conscription to the RAF provided one of the few opportunities for Benson to experience artistic freedom. The possibilities of otherwise unobtainable materials such as pastels, paper, perspex and plaster of paris fuelled his ingenuity at the base’s well-stocked workshop.
On completion of his RAF service, Benson briefly returned to the clothing factory...

The possibilities of otherwise unobtainable materials such as pastels, paper, perspex and plaster of paris fuelled his ingenuity at the base’s well-stocked workshop.
On completion of his RAF service, Benson briefly returned to the clothing factory now owned by his father. After his marriage to Ruth at 21, in an effort to provide for his new wife, Benson decided to set up his own business. Starting with a single sewing machine and tailoress, Benson and Ruth soon expanded the business. By the 1970s they employed over 50 staff and supplied to prestigious stores such as Dickens & Jones and Harrods.
As the decade progressed, however, fashion turned towards less structured, more casual garments; a trend that prompted Benson to retire and spend time with his first love, sculpture. Buoyed by the liberty he enjoyed in his studio, Benson succeeded in selling some of his first pieces of sculpture, a collection of sporting trophies...

Edition of 25; Ed. no. 6/25
Nick Knight is among the world’s most influential and visionary photographers. He has worked on a range of often controversial issues during his career – from racism, disability, ageism, and more recently fat-ism. He continually challenges conventional ideals of beauty.
The photographer Nick Knight has been portraying international supermodel Kate Moss for more than two decades. As one of the most photographed women in the world who has been accompanied by Knight for many years, Moss serves as the subject of his work. In cooperation with the Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg, the world famous photographer has eternalised a three-dimensional portrait of the Briton in biscuit porcelain for the first time.
The figurine developed in the master workshops of Nymphenburg in 2014 is reminiscent of Christian iconography. Attributes such as the filigree crown of thorns and the voluminous loincloth make reference to religious relics...

ARTIST STATEMENT:
"The beauty, grace and symmetry of traditional figurative sculpture has always called to me. It is my school and my obsession. My language is the figure and I feel the need to comment on the human condition, sometimes distorted by demons, and other times enchanted by all that is pure within us.
I have renewed my relationship to the human form. It has undergone a metamorphosis from silent conformity, where the rules and proportions are tantamount to a partial figure where the human condition becomes of primary importance. I want to stretch the canons of classical realism by giving beauty another voice that challenges socio-political norms. I speak of spirit and courage, of heritage and of imperishable strength.
Today I challenge the traditional figure, creating a characterization of the Spirit; a metaphor to our inner world that might encourage us to seek a deeper understanding of ourselves. Consciousness, as a philosophical concept, can lead us many places, from the empirical world of the cognitive sciences to a theoretical one, where psychology attempts to provide the answers. It is my intention to reach into the 21st. century using sculpture to transcend disciplinary boundaries between the physical bodies in bronze and the self-knowledge and understanding of the ethereal realm that is our internal landscape."
