These four botanical specimens from the herbarium of A. Brun were hand-picked, pressed and preserved in the late-19th century. Each plant specimen is elegantly presented within a fine hardwood frame and includes a hand-written taxonomy card with the plant’s scientific name, family, habitat, and date collected. Originally used to document the plant diversity of a particular geographic area, herbariums wonderfully preserve the beauty of nature, making them quite a captivating and charming addition to any wall. The painterly, multicolored effect of this pastel ice cream still life is achieved by printing “à la poupée”, in which multiple colors can be applied to the plate for printing at one time. Oldenburg first printed in brown, and for the second plate, freely applied yellow, green, purple, blue, and light purple, producing an array of loosely sketched pastel confections. Image 13.5 x 21.15 in. / 34.3 x 53.7 cm Paper 22.5 x 31.25 in. / 57 x 79.4 cm Soft-ground etching and aquatint in six colors “à la poupée” on cream, thick, slightly textured Arches paper. Signed by the artist with initials lower center in pencil, dated 1976 lower right in pencil, and annotated AP VIII/XII lower left in pencil. Ice cream is a subject Claes Oldenburg has returned to again and again: from monumental sculptures of ice cream cones, to plaster parfaits, to countless drawings and designs. On his soft sculptures, Oldenburg wrote: "Reversing the expectations of hard sculpture, these huge collapsing objects rely on gravity and chance for their final form." ARTIST PROFILE: Originally from the North East of England, Gavin graduated in Fine art in 2000, and has been building his portfolio as an artist specialising in painting and screen printing - often combining the two, which helps communicate his chosen narrative. Gavin uses both vivid colours and expressive strokes to create engaging and lively pieces - his recent painting series ‘Landscapes of the Mind’ used the fluidity and movement of the paint to convey how an environment can effect ones state of thinking. Alongside his painting, Gavin is an established screen-printer exhibiting at many galleries across the U.K. and with new clients in New York his international profile is starting to expand. A regular at the Affordable Arts Fair, Gavin was one of 20 artists chosen to work alongside Film Four for an exhibition at Somerset House. His screen-prints often depict colourful, nostalgic images. Iconic designs which are humorous ornamentation and invite an opening for conversation. Gavin takes an original painting and creates many separate layers of half tones to screen-print by hand the final piece. Using this method he captures many textures and depths of colour within a piece of work. He recently designed and created a piece of work for the charity Help Refugee's 'Choose Love' campaign in conjunction with Printclub and the celebrated designer Katharine Hamnett, highlighting the current plight of refugees.
