Distress Series, (Disconnect)

2021

About the Item

As part of my "Distress" series, the steel and wood work titled "Disconnect" addresses our civilizations habitual unwillingness to properly manage our environs. Outdated systems and temporary fixes as opposed to long term conservation as we all know is not working, for now, or more importantly for the future. This piece as well as all works included in the "Distress" series articulate the dire need for help by visually broadcasting an SOS call in Morse code on the panel surface. The natural tree limb/branch has been sealed with a rubberized coating, this action exemplifies the importance, or lack thereof, we place on maintaining our planet.

  • Distress series (Egyptian Blue)
    By Mark Beltchenko Studio
Located in Grosse Pointe Park, MI
"Egyptian Blue," a poignant addition to the "Distress" series, serves as a striking commentary on our civilization's persistent failure to responsibly manage our environment. Through the use of symbolic elements and a visually compelling composition, the artwork addresses the prevalence of short-term solutions, represented by masking tape and staples, in contrast to the imperative need for long-term conservation efforts. The choice of the title, "Egyptian Blue," adds an intriguing layer of historical and cultural reference, suggesting a timeless connection to the struggles of civilizations in managing their surroundings. The piece delves into the urgency of acknowledging and addressing environmental distress, emphasizing that makeshift solutions are not sustainable, neither for the present nor for the crucial future. A distinctive feature of the artwork is the incorporation of Morse code...
