"Insider Series" "Above the Fray II"

2009

About the Item

Title: "Above the Fray II: A Cynical Gaze at Privileged Networks" Within the thought-provoking "Insider Series," "Above the Fray II" emerges as a sculpture that casts a somewhat cynical gaze at networks of insider information reserved for a select few. Crafted from carved limestone, steel, and bronze, this piece delves into the dynamics of information control and the impenetrable nature of governing bodies. The hulking, shapeless mass of carved stone becomes a metaphor for a governing body that has lost its recognizable form, obscured by layers of complexity and opacity. The lack of recognizable shape suggests an entity that may no longer be identifiable, evoking a sense of mystery and detachment from the public eye. The three telescoping legs supporting the biomorphic mass add an element of control. The ability to raise and lower the monolith at will, implies a deliberate manipulation of information accessibility—bringing it closer or further away from the ground level, or the masses. The jutting tongue-like extension introduces a visual metaphor for the selective nature of information dissemination, capable of snatching up anything deemed unnecessary or detrimental to its own well-being. A steel channel, a consistent element across the "Insider" series, pierces the stone, concealing a network of wires that symbolize the privileged information circulating within. This concealed network speaks to the covert channels through which privileged information flows, hidden from public scrutiny. "Above the Fray II" prompts viewers to contemplate the implications of information control, raising questions about transparency, accountability, and the power dynamics inherent in governance. The sculpture invites viewers to interpret and engage with the visual representation of insider networks, sparking a critical reflection on the access and distribution of information within societal structures. 2
