ACADEMIC STYLE

During the Renaissance, the first European fine art academies were established in Italy and would guide the style and standards of visual culture in the following centuries. Academic art became dominant across the continent in the 17th century, with artists coming together to offer instruction in this style of painting and sculpture

The academic art period represented a significant change from the previous era when painters, sculptors and other artists were part of guilds and seen more as artisans than purveyors of culture. While patronage from the elite and the church remained pivotal, young artists were able to support themselves for the first time through academic exhibitions and an independent marketplace. The leading academies included the French Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture founded in Paris in 1648 (which became the Académie des Beaux-Arts after the French Revolution) and the London Royal Academy of Arts formed in 1768 under the inaugural leadership of painter Joshua Reynolds

Academy students sketched drawings based on prints, sculptures and, finally, live models. Movements including neoclassicism and romanticism were particularly popular in these art schools and institutions where the influence of Raphael and Nicolas Poussin was prominent. Beaux Arts architecture and furniture design drew on these movements, too, and, as they also originated at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, the disciplines share common ground with academic painting and sculpture.

Although academic art was a major shift for artistic status when it began, by the middle of the 19th century it was viewed as stodgy and resistant to new ideas, with the subject matter of artists such as William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Jean-Léon Gérôme generally limited to allegorical or mythological themes. Impressionism, realism and the other movements that engaged with contemporary issues that followed were direct reactions to the academic tradition, although it continued to inform the avant-garde as artists like Gustav Klimt and Pablo Picasso started their practices as academic realists.

JOHANN ANDREAS NAUMANN (1744-1826) JOHANN FREDERICH NAUMANN (1780-1857) NATURGESCHICHTE DER VOGEL MITTELEUROPAS WITH PLATES BY: Keulemans, Kleinschmidt, Geisler, Von Riesenthal, De Maes and Goering GERMANY, 1890-1905 CHROMOLITHOGRAPHY Johann Friedrich Naumann (1780 - 1857) was a German scientist and editor. Highly regarded as the founder of scientific ornithology in Europe, Naumann has often been referred to as the ‘Father of Ornithology”. His presentation shows the birds in their natural settings. Naumann employed renowned bird artists of his time such as. Keulemans, Kleinschmidt, Geisler, Von Riesenthal, De Maes and Goering. The resulting tome included over 400 plates. So popular was this work that it enjoyed a second printing less than 20 years later. Its relevancy was undisputed. Naturgeschicte der Land- Und Wasser- Vogel Des Nordlichen Deutschlands un Angranaender Lander, Naumann the elder’s work, was first published in 1795-1817. Naturgeschichte der Vogel Mitteleuropas, or Natural History of Central European Birds, was and published in various formats between 1797 and 1817. Buchanan and Fisher describe this later second edition as the ". . . most scholarly and complete ornithological text book of its time (perhaps of any time)." Reference: Fine Bird Books (1700-1900). Sacheverell Sitwell, Handasyde Buchanan and James Fisher...

Bufo Contemporary Bronze Sculpture Nude Boy Marble Stone Male Figure
Located in Utrecht, NL
Bufo Contemporary Bronze Sculpture Nude Boy Marble Stone Male Figure Wim van der Kant (1949, Kampen) is a selftaught artist. Next to his busy profession as a teacher at a high school, he intensively practises his profession as a sculptor. Only when his work would measure up to his own standards, he decided to present it to the rest of the world. In 1995, he exhibited for the first time with Morren Galleries. Van der Kant desires to sculpt young people who still stand uninhibited and curiously in life. The reason he chooses to sculpt boys is, because he is one himself, this way the subject is closer to him. The anatomy of his figures testify of perfectionism. Van der Kant's subjects show similarities with the sculptures from the Greek and Roman antiquity...

Mind Games
Located in Istanbul, 34
Porcelain on granite Deniz Pireci's works; He tries to rediscover all the meanings contained in ceramics as a tool, to emphasize them even more, and sometimes simply to reveal them. As a tool, it is obvious that porcelain refers to fragility, craft, handcraft as well as mystery and the invisible. The use of porcelain in the field of contemporary art necessarily encompasses all these concepts, which it evokes as a material, within its scope. Pireci produces works that are included in many different trends with its approach to materials and art. At the same time, it not only questions our sovereignty over images, it creates an opportunity for us to lose it for a while. (Aysegul Sonmez) Deniz Pireci, who deals with issues such as migration, locality, identity, cultural difference and gender from different perspectives in her art practice, was born in Istanbul. She graduated, Ceramic Department of Marmara University Fine Arts Faculty. She completed her Master's Degree in Marmara University Fine Arts Institute Ceramic-Glass Main Art Branch in 2006 and still continues her work in her studio in Istanbul. Some of the artists works are on display at; Eczacibasi - VitrA Ceramic Art Studio, Korea Museum of KOCEF, Turkish...
