About the Item

This original sculpture by Sy Rosenwasser features a loving and embracing mother and her three children. It is signed and dated 1997 and sits on a black swivel marble. She made ten editions after that. I took many close-up pictures of the sculpture that show the patina of the bronze with the different tones. The marble was also chosen for its unusual structure: black with little white spots. ----------- Seymour F. Rosenwasser was an artist. Seymour F. Rosenwasser was born in 1925 and died in 2012. Also born in 1925 and of this same generation are Viktor Poltavets, Robert Kerr, Nellina Pistolessi, Jean Bernadac, and Huang Chuen-Yau. Seymour F. Rosenwasser's creative work was primarily inspired by the 1950s. It can be said that the 1950s were dominated by Abstract Expressionism, a form of painting that prioritized expressive brushstrokes and explored ideas about organic nature, spirituality, and the sublime. Much of the focus was on formal painting techniques, and action painting ideas were conflated with the political freedom of the United States society as opposed to the strict nature of the Soviet bloc. In the post-war period, the lens of modernism was internationally focused on developments in New York City. The Second World War had brought many leading artists to the city in exile from Europe, leading to a noteworthy pooling of talent and ideas. Influential Europeans who came to New York and inspired American artists included Piet Mondrian, Josef Albers, and Hans Hoffmann, who, between them, set the foundations for much of the United States’ significant cultural growth in the decades thereafter. Influential artists of the Abstract Expressionist Generation included Jackson Pollock (who innovated his famed drip, splatter, and pour painting techniques), Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Frank Kline, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still, and Adolph Gottlieb. It was a male-dominated environment, but a necessary reassessment of this period has underlined the contributions of female artists such as Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and Louise Bourgeois.

A carver, designer, and teacher, Wolfgang Behl was born in Berlin, Germany where he studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. His teacher was otto Hitzberger, sculptor and architecture carver. I have seen some his work, particularly in carved wood compared to Constantin Brancusi although this one seems way more reminiscent of Alberto Giacometti. In 1939, Behl came to the United States and taught briefly in Pennsylvania at the Perkiomen School and in Rhode Island at the Rhode Island School of Design. There in 1943, he won the Joseph N.
