The Hunt Breaking cover

Oil on canvas

Samuel Alken junior was the eldest son of Sporting artist Samuel Alken (1756-1815), he was born on April 10th. The family mostly became sporting artists, his younger brothers Henry Thomas (Ben Tally Ho), George and Sefferien.
Little is known about his life, in his father's will he was the only son mentioned, but this was to leave him 1s., which presumably was a derogatory legacy perhaps because, as Shaw Sparrow suggests, he traded on his father's name, signing in the same manner. However, as he often signed quite clearly S. Alken Jnr one feels it unlikely, but it does imply S. Alken Snr also painted sporting pictures.
There has always been great confusion over the Samuel Alkens and for a long time they were looked upon as one person. number of prints were published after Samuel Junior's work including a set of sixteen published in the early 1820's depicting various sports, including hunting, racing, shooting and fishing. In the works recorded by him, his style would seem closer to that of Barenger. A lot of small wooded shooting scenes...

The Artist's Studio
By Irving E. Hurlburt
Located in Storrs, CT
The Artist's Studio. c. 1914. Oil on canvas. 24 1/8 x 32. The canvas is in fine condition, having been professionally lined, cleaned and varnished. The painting is housed in a 29 1/2 x 37-inch Sully-style gold frame. Signed, lower right and also on the verso of the canvas in the center of the image.
Hurlburt apparently created a 'period piece' work of art. The two maids are dressed in late 19th-century clothing. The slight puff at the top of the sleeve is 1897 - 1898. The maid on the left has her scarf done in a way that is quite Dutch or Flemish. The woman on the right has a headscarf that could just be the tie of the scarf making that shape in the front. If her hair is done up with a chignon in the back causing the scarf to be full in the back, the placement of that bun would make the piece 1908 - 1912. The "Psyche knot" was very popular in 1910. The woman in the painting on the easel is maybe old fashioned with a simpler and fuller version of early 20th century hairstyles. It's hard to tell if what is around her neck is a boa or a collar, but boas of all shapes and sizes were popular in the 1890's. Her gown is decidedly unfitted and appears to have a loose belt at the waist. If the skirt is in layers with the light skirt length over a darker skirt, that would put the outfit in 1910 or 1914. The problem is the waist. In 1910 - 1912 it was a neo-empire revival with a high waist. It wasn't until 1914 that the waists were coming back down with sashes at the waistline. It is just not specific enough to see the details that would help to date it. I guess I would be inclined to date it more 1914 - the approximate date of the woman in the painting, and assuming that the maids are dressed in an old fashioned way, but their skirts are awfully full and long for the period to be practical for cleaning.
Irving E. Hurlburt lived and worked in New Haven, Connecticut. For most of his life, he resided at Wolcott Street in New Haven. Possibly the room is the artist's studio. He studied at the Yale School of Fine Arts, 1890-93 He was a member of the New Haven Paint and Clay Club. In 1888 he received the Ethel Childe Walker Prize at the Yale School of Fine Arts. His sketches of Pictures of New Haven show historic buildings, scenes and events of New Haven, CT. They were reproduced as wood engravings in the New Haven Almanack for the years 1906 to 1913, published by Ye Olde Hardware Store of the John E. Bassett Co. His other published sketches in that venue were: The Tontine Coffee House, Mayor Roger Sherman...

Mike & Champ
Oil on canvas, signed
Image size: 23 inches x 28 inches
Size including frame: 28 inches x 33 inches
A fine sporting painting horse portrait of a bay pony called Mike and a terrier named Champ by William Eddowes Turner. The prize winning horse can be seen standing in a stable next to a Jack Russell terrier dog. Other horses can be seen further along through the stable door. Although the name of Mike’s owner is not known, his initials (HBL) can be seen on the blanket on the stable floor. The owner most likely commissioned Turner to paint this portrait to celebrate horse’s career. Another portrait was also commissioned by the owner around the same period of a white hunter called ‘The Peeler’ with another terrier.
William Eddowes Turner was born in Sneinton, Nottinghamshire in 1836 to George Johnson Turner, a lacemaker and Betsy Turner (nee Clark). His father died...

Cattle Watering in a Landscape - British 19th century art Victorian oil painting
By Samuel Bough
Located in London, GB
This lovely British Victorian landscape oil painting is attributed to noted artist Sam Bough. It was painted circa 1855 after Bough had moved to Hamilton Lanarkshire in Scotland to focus on painting landscapes along side fellow artist Alexander Frazer. The composition is several cattle watering in a stream under the boughs of an ancient tree. There is superb impasto, for example on the clouds and this is a charming 19th century oil painting.
Provenance. London estate.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 29 inches by 16 inches unframed and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in an ornate gilt Victorian frame, 36 inches by 23 inches framed and in good condition.
Samuel Bough RSA (1822–1878) was an English-born landscape painter who spent much of his career working in Scotland. He was born the third of five children in Abbey Street, Carlisle in northern England, the son of James Bough (1794-1845), a shoemaker, and Lucy Walker, a cook. He was raised in relative poverty, but with a keen encouragement in the arts. He was self-taught but mixed with local artists such as Richard Harrington and George Sheffield, and was strongly influenced by the work of Turner. After an unsuccessful attempt to live as an artist in Carlisle he obtained a job and as a theatre scenery painter in Manchester in 1845, later also working in Glasgow in the same role. Encouraged by Daniel Macnee to take up landscape painting he moved to Hamilton from 1851-4 and worked there with Alexander Fraser. In 1854 he moved to Port Glasgow to work on his technique of painting ships and harbours. His paintings were noted for their sensitivity to atmosphere and light, were often of cloudy shorelines and busy harbours. He also began supplementing his income by illustrating books, before moving to Edinburgh in 1855. On coming to Edinburgh he lived in a terraced house at 5 Malta Terrace in the Stockbridge area of the city. Following Turner's example, he became a skilful painter of seaports. He was buried in Dean Cemetery Edinburgh on 23 November 1878. The grave bears a bronze medallion of his head by William Brodie...
