Tommi Parzinger for Charak Modern Display Cabinet, c 1955, Signed
By Tommi Parzinger, Charak Furniture Company
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A rare collectors item, this fully restored Tommi Parzinger for Charak Modern (c. 1955) display cabiinet / vitrine, features beautiful french polish with Parzinger's signature statement door handles. Signed with Charak Modern label on the backside of the upper cabinet.
This refined and sophisticated Parzinger credenza with glass display hutch is perfect for those high-end luxury pads looking for an incredible and collectible statement piece, which Parzinger was known to create. The gorgeous color is close to the Hermès orange, but perhaps a little bit deeper and bolder - perhaps somewhere between Hermès orange and blood orange. Beauty in every detail, from the cross-cut glass panes, to the upper flared embellishments and the signature Parzinger door handles.
Let's not skip one more aspect of this table that is equally important - the collectors appeal. Furniture by Tommi Parzinger is one of the most sought-after and cherished items of sophisticated collectors. This isn't for your typical Eames and George Nelson collector, it is much more for a refined collector, perhaps a connoisseur of fine rarities. The quality of the materials and craftsmanship and design details are something to be admired. Parzinger and Charak Modern designed and crafted some of the highest quality furniture of the early and mid 20th Century. That was at a time when US manufacturing was at its best. And now in this day and age of cheap products not meant to last - this table is your daily reminder that 'they don't make them like they used to.'
We restored this incredible sideboard display cabinet with hand-applying a new French Polish lacquer. French Polish is the most laborious and expensive finish because it requires many repetitive coats and each one hand polished to a fine glass-like finish, and while it is very expensive, it is worth it for rare and valuable pieces like this Tommi Parzinger vitrine. The results are nothing short of spectacular - such a smooth, clear and deep finish - it looks almost like a sheet of glass (much more incredible in-person than you can see (or touch / feel) in the photos). And besides how incredible it looks - it will also protect your investment for the decades ahead. This Parzinger cabinet is an ideal example for the most discriminating interior designer client or collector.

James Bearden Segment Etagere
By James Bearden
Located in New York, NY
"Segment Étagère” a sculptural work in torch-cut and polychromed steel with fused bronze, solvent dyes, and glass enamel, with four glass shelves. By American artist James Bearden. The rectangular étagère, with its dramatic yet delicate composition and juxtaposition of shapes and colors drawn from Bearden’s evolving vocabulary, is perched atop four slender legs. Bearden's work was featured in a 2020 solo exhibition at the NY Design Center titled "James Bearden: Technical and Aesthetic Revelations," in an article in the January 2017 Interior Design Magazine; in an introspective feature on 1stdibs; and in a feature article in DSM Magazine. The étagère is part of a group of case pieces being offered individually--see the photo of three cabinets below. Custom sizes and colors are available upon request. In an introduction to the 2020 exhibition, curator Kartrina Weinberg wrote: "In the two years after the artist’s last solo exhibition — where the material reality of steel was evident in both its title and monochromatic appearance — Mr. Bearden sought to break free from pre-conceived judgment of his medium, as well as the persistent misnomers applied to his art. While subtle color play has always existed in his previous works, the development in his coloring technique — from painted polychrome to dyed glass enamel — allowed for dramatic saturation and stunning complexity in his new palette, bringing heightened immediacy to his biomorphic and anthropomorphic imagery. The artist had always challenged the gravitational reality of steel, but he has found new expressions towards verticality and delicacy, transcending material and elevating function. The open compositions, ranging from ornamental tracery to dynamic use of negative space, allow for the interplay of light and air, animating the environment with ever-changing viewing possibilities. This exhibition took inspiration from the naturalist traditions and fantastical imagery of Early Netherlandish paintings...

De Coene Showcase in Glass, Steel and Teak
By De Coene Frères
Located in Waalwijk, NL
De Coene, showcase, teak, steel, glass, Belgium, 1960s
Modernist showcase with lockable doors, accompanied with a steel frame and wooden shelf. The vitrine features the Brutalist characteristics of De Coene. The showcase was originally designed for a governmental building in Brussels. The Kunstwerkstede De Coene was invited to design the interior project in the late 1950s-1960s. De Coene designed several high-quality pieces exclusively for this building, among others these vitrines. For the design of these pieces, De Coene was inspired by the previous furniture in this building, which were designed by master designer Jules Wabbes. This is reflected for example in the steel frame.
De Coene was founded in 1887 in Kortrijk (Belgium) by Jozef de Coene, who was at that time 13 years old. In 1895, his younger brother Adolphe joined the company. In their early years, De Coene was inspired by Henry van de Velde, Art Deco and the Arts & Crafts movement. The company made many custom made furnishings which leads to an expansive growth. After world war one, the brother visited the United States where they became acquainted with laminated wood production, and purchased a wood-stripping machine. They were the first company that made triplex in Belgium which led to the ability to mass produce. In 1954 they received the right to produce Knoll furniture. But although the company produced on a large-scale, their were still world famous for their meticulously detailed, high-quality and Art Deco inspired furniture.

Maurice Dufrene Gilt Sculpted Vitrine
By Maurice Dufrêne
Located in Philadelphia, PA
French Early Classic Art Deco cabinet/vitrine by Maurice Dufrene, circa 1912, in gilt sculpted wood . This cabinet is pictured in Dufrène's own Hôtel Parrticulier (private residence), at 22, rue Bayard in Paris, taken in 1918 (see photo below). The lemonwood version of this cabinet was exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1912 and is now on permanent display at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris (see photo below).
This cabinet is in original condition and a scan of the original drawing is shown here.
Maurice Dufrêne
(1876 - 1955)
One of the premiere French designers of the 20th Century, Maurice Dufrene was born in Paris in 1876. He was educated at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. By 1899, at the age of just 23, he became the director and manager of La Maison Moderne. This shop represented an association of artists who were working together to create designs which could be produced in multiples.
Dufrene's work was first shown at salons in 1902 and from 1903 he regularly exhibited at Salon d'Automne and Salons of Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. At the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes (which would later give the movement "Art Deco" its name), Dufrene's designs included luxury boutiques, the living room of Une Ambassade Francaise pavilion, the music salon...
