This is a superb quality antique Italian Pietra Dura mounted, gilt brass and alabaster table-centre comport dish, dating from the late 19th century.
With striking pierced Neo-Gothic chased brass mounts this splendid alabaster dish is set with six highly decorative pietra dura roundels depicting various floral decoration.
It is raised on a sturdy circular brass base.
It is a sumptuous piece which will make a great statement in any special room.

Pietra Dura is a term for the inlay technique of using cut and fitted, highly polished colored stones to create images. It is considered a decorative art.
Pietre dure is an Italian plural meaning "hard rocks" or hardstones; the singular pietra dura is also encountered in Italian. In Italian, but not in English, the term embraces all gem engraving and hardstone carving, which is the artistic carving of three-dimensional objects in semi-precious stone, normally from a single piece, for example in Chinese jade.
The traditional convention in English has been to use the singular pietra dura just to denote multi-colored inlay work. However, in recent years there has been a trend to use pietre dure as a term for the same thing, but not for all of the techniques it covers, in Italian.
But the title of a 2008 exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Art of the Royal Court: Treasures in Pietre Dure from the Palaces of Europe used the full Italian sense of the term, probably because they thought that it had greater brand recognition. The material on the website speaks of objects such as a vase in lapis lazuli as being examples of "hardstone carving (pietre dure)"
The Victoria & Albert Museum in London uses both versions on its website, but uses pietra dura. "A method of inlaying colored marbles or semi-precious stones into a stone base, often in geometric or flower patterns...."

This chest on chest is of rectangular form in two sections. The upper section has twelve similar drawers in four registers and carrying handles on the sides. The base has a pair of frieze drawers above a single deep drawer, disguised as a pair, with four handles and flanked by carved Nagini whose monopodia scroll supports are raised on blocks to form the feet. The whole piece is decorated with an overall pattern of interlaced stars and circles embellished with ebony and ivory dots and is applied with brass handles and lock escutcheons. Goanese, circa 1800.

(Often much debate is had as to whether miniature furniture was
made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who is looking
for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase
their talents, or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans
sample piece, which is when a few articles were made as
scale models in advance of a road trip during which the salesman
would travel the country showing prospective clients
the kind of items they could produce back at the workshop and
take orders from. This particular miniature chest of drawers
is probably the latter and would have been made as a sample
piece. The construction is exquisite and the attention to tiny
detail phenomenal in all honesty. They work that would have
gone into constructing this with all of its fine details would actually
have been more of a challenge and taken a more skilled
craftsmen than its full size counterparts would have done.
It is also super quality and unusual being constructed from burr
oak which has taken on an exceptional rich colour and patina
over the years of its life. A really quite charming piece of
antique miniature furniture...

An exceptional, fine and impressive, rare pair of large antique George V English sterling silver lyre candlesticks; an addition of our ornamental silverware collection.
These exceptional antique George V English sterling silver candlesticks have been modelled in the form lyre.
The upper portion of the stringed instrument is surmounted with a swept oval capital, encompassed with embossed concave batwing decoration.
The capitals retain the original detachable hallmarked push fit sconces, each embellished with thread decorated borders to the rim.
The column of each candlestick features details replicating the opposing scrolling frame and five-strings of the musical instrument.
Each oval swept base is embellished with fluted batwing decoration, accented with further thread decoration to the rim.
These antique candlesticks have weighted bases and retain the original hallmarked silver lined underside.
Such large candlesticks, modelled in the form of lyre, are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.
Condition
These rare sterling silver candlesticks are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and are in exceptional condition. Each candlestick has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition. Full hallmarks struck to the rim of the bases, in addition to part hallmarks to the underside and sleeve of the sconce are very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.

A magnificent, fine and impressive, large pair of antique George V English sterling silver bowls / centrepieces in the Art Nouveau style, an addition to our presentation silverware collection.
These magnificent and large antique George V English sterling silver bowls/centrepieces have a compressed circular form onto a knopped pedestal and domed circular foot.
The plain body of each piece is encircled with an impressive band of applied and chased olive leaf festoon decoration consisting of overlapping leaf designs with a bead motif to subdivision.
Both sides of each piece is further ornamented with exceptional and large applied vacant cartouche bordered with a ribbon tied oak and olive branch, in addition to a scrolling and leaf motif to the upper portion.
The upper portions of these concaved cartouches are subtly elevated and joined to the moulded decoration to the shaped rim.
These antique silver bowls are fitted with impressive and large Art Nouveau style scrolling handles with plain plateaued upper portions and subtle thumbpieces.
The knop to the pedestal is encircled with an impressive chased band of oak leaf and acorn decoration accented with a tied ribbon design.
