Georgian Mahogany Oval Butlers Tray on Stand
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A very good quality late 18th century, Georgian period, mahogany oval butlers tray of Panelled design, retaining original brass hinges to folding sides with pierced carrying handles, raised on later square leg mahogany stand. During the 18th and 19th centuries a coffee table was not what we regard as a coffee table in the 21st century. Coffee tables back then were always full height, effectively side tables. The modern, low, coffee table is really something which began to be seen during the early 20th century onwards. Based on the above there is a variety of different methods to incorporate a coffee table into an interior for people who wish to furnish their properties with genuine antique furniture, whilst still allowing for the practicalities and function which is required in modern times. Therefore as is now normal with by far the majority of these butlers trays which we see, due to the fact they make absolutely perfect coffee tables, this has been removed from its original, tall, folding stand at some point and fitted onto a lower, more practical and sturdy stand constructed from old antique wood. It’s worth noting that generally this means an old broken table...

Guillerme et Chambron, Oak & Smoked Glass Coffee Table, France, Mid-Century
By Guillerme et Chambron, Votre Maison
Located in New York, NY
Robert Guillerme studied design and architecture at the École Boule, graduating in 1934. After the Second World War he moved to Lille, in the north of France, where he decorated homes and designed furniture for the well regarded Rogier workshops. In 1948 Jacques Chambron left his work as a painter and decorator on the Rue Nollet in Paris, and relocated his family to join Guillerme. The two had met in 1940 while imprisoned by the Germans in East Prussia and bonded over, among other more obvious things, their shared passion for design. In 1949 the pair discovered Émile Dariosecq, a master cabinet maker who had a shop in the city, and who was willing to produce their designs. The three started Votre Maison. The association was destined to be as influential as prolific. Not only did Votre Maison produce over two thousand models during the later half of the twentieth century, it also left an indelible stamp on design of the 50s, 60s and 70s. The company’s output served as a model for a vast field of livable contemporaneous design. The soul of Guillerme et Chambron’s work was in the company’s name (“Your House"). Their focus was as keenly attuned to functionality—furniture’s use in daily life—as to the creation of innovative design. For the pair of designers the home was envisioned as a place where the family could live both comfortably and in aesthetic harmony. Robert Guillerme, who designed most of the work, possessed a limitless creative ambition, producing designs for everything from grand dressers and sideboards to the smallest elements of a space, such as pedestals, shelving, benches, and lighting. This steady output of beautiful furniture bucked convention not merely in the equal emphasis Guillerme placed on function and aesthetics, but in the almost paradoxical creation...

Paul Vera, Art Deco Table in Iron and Tile, France, 1946
By Paul Vera
Located in New York, NY
This long side table has a ceramic top assembled from tiles created by the master ceramist Paul Vera, each depicting a fanciful vignette or design and glazed in black and white. The base, in wrought iron, is assembled of long thin legs, and possesses a shelf, swirling on its sides and latticed at its center. This work is typical of Véra’s output during the Second World War. Despite being removed from his home by German forces, he continued his artistic research and production, albeit with more modest means, and explored a variety of ceramic possibilities. He created tiles with exuberant and whimsical characters such as peasants and gardeners (his brother André Véra was a famous gardener) in the kiln of his friend Jean-Paul Luthringer, a sculptor in St-Germain-en-Laye. At Salon de l’Imagerie 1946, he exhibited models of ceramic tiles for bathrooms, swimming pools, fish shops and post offices. That same year, La Maîtrise of Galeries Lafayette department store ordered ceramic tiles for the decoration of an oak sideboard by Marcelle Maisonnier.   The Musée Paul & André Véra of St Germain-en-Laye has in its collection a ceramic tobacco pot with very similar figures of doves and characters painted in white on a dark brown background. This box was given as a wedding gift by Paul Véra...

Small Georgian Mahogany Butlers Tray on Stand
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A Good Quality And Unusually Small Georgian Mahogany Butlers Tray, Of Diminutive Proportion, Having Elegant Shaped Sides With Pierced Carrying Handles And Well Figured Top, Housed On Later Square Chamfered Leg Mahogany Stand. Therefore it is now incredibly common to find 18th and 19th century trays of varying shape, size and design utilised as coffee tables. As with all the others that we have seen this particular tray has been fitted onto a low, practical and sturdy stand constructed from old antique wood. It’s worth noting that generally this means an old broken table...
