1950s Plastic Chairs For Sale on 1stDibs

Find a variety of 1950s plastic chairs available on 1stDibs. The range of distinct 1950s plastic chairs — often made from plastic, metal and fabric — can elevate any home. There are all kinds of 1950s plastic chairs available, from those produced as long ago as the 20th Century to those made as recently as the 20th Century. 1950s plastic chairs are generally popular furniture pieces, but Mid-Century Modern and Scandinavian Modern styles are often sought at 1stDibs. Large 1950s plastic chairs can prove too imposing for some spaces, so the smaller 1950s plastic chairs available at 1stDibs — each spanning 15.75 inches in width — may make for a better choice. There have been many well-made 1950s plastic chairs over the years, but those made by Friso Kramer, Charles and Ray Eames and Herman Miller are often thought to be among the most beautiful.

How Much are 1950s Plastic Chairs?

Prices for 1950s plastic chairs start at $184 and top out at $28,000 with the average selling for $3,110.

Finding the Right Seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

Questions About 1950s Plastic Chairs

The world first saw plastic lawn chairs in 1965. Designed by Joe Colombo, the chair was called the Universale, and was defined by its blocky appearance. Find a variety of styles of plastic lawn chairs from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The history of plastic as a raw material for furniture traces back to the years immediately after World War II. Improvements in plastics technology during the 1960s created a boom in the design of new plastic furniture, and it’s been a popular material ever since. Shop a collection of vintage and contemporary plastic furniture from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 17, 2021
A common plastic used in chairs is thermoplastic polypropylene injected into a mold. Because of its strength and durability, thermoplastic polypropylene is a great material and it doesn't present the risk of breaking or a furnishing losing its shape. This type of plastic is good for chairs that might undergo heavy wear.

The clothing style in the 1950s was well tailored and classic. For women, dresses with padded busts, cinched waists and hips, and full circle skirts were popular, and the collared button-up shirt dress came into fashion during the decade. Men tended to wear suits in neutral gray, dark blue and brown colors made out of easy-to-care-for synthetic fabrics. Straight-cut double-breasted blazers were commonly worn for casual occasions. On 1stDibs, explore a variety of vintage clothing from the 1950s.
