Driade Seating

Italian

Italian furniture brand Driade offers modern designs that are joyful, whimsical and slightly mischievous — words that might be used to describe the tree nymph of Greek mythology for which the company is named. Faye Toogood’s chunky, stout Roly Poly armchair and Fabio Novembre’s enigmatic Nemo chair — in which a backrest assumes the form of a human face — are just two examples of Driade’s eclectic furnishings.

Driade was founded in 1968 by brother and sister Enrico and Antonia Astori, and Adelaide Acerbi Astori, Enrico’s wife. Described by the company as a “factory of art,” Driade was focused solely on bringing distinctive and creative seating, case pieces and decorative objects to market in its early years. The brand sought to mass-produce decor and furniture that could also be seen as provocative works of art.

Driade's initial collaborations included Italian designers such as Enzo Mari, Nanda Vigo, Giotto Stoppino and Rodolfo Bonetto, to name a few. In the 1980s, the brand worked with influential and renowned designers from around the globe. In 1984, Driade partnered with French designer Philippe Starck and debuted his iconic Costes armchair during the same year. Projects with architects and furniture designers such as Ron Arad, Toyo Ito, Borek Sipek, Patricia Urquiola and others followed into the 2000s.

Over more than five decades — the company celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2018 — Driade’s fruitful partnerships have culminated in a vast catalog of chairs, sofas, coffee tables and other furnishings for the home and garden that evoke a unique and diverse blend of cultures.

Driade has also garnered international acclaim, winning the Compasso d’Oro award in 1979 and 2001 for Enzo Mari’s Delfira chair and ebony-finished, chipboard-top table, and again in 2008 for Ron Arad’s MT3 rocking armchair.

On 1stDibs, discover a range of vintage and contemporary Driade tables, cabinets, armchairs and other furniture.

Ludovica +Roberto Palomba Driade "Rever" Three-Seat Sectional Sofa, 2017
By Ludovica + Roberto Palomba 1, Driade
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Rever is the product of the Driade collection designed for young people by Ludovica +Roberto Palomba. The sofa is made in a wooden frame with elastic belting and padding in polyurethane foams with different densities with a removable cover in fabric or fixed in leather. Rever features plump, generous curves and proportions. The original way the armrests are fitted a fundamental feature of this sofa – is paired with special attention to detail: the slightly padded edge looks as if it comes from a fashion house because it is inspired by the lapel of jackets and the flap of pockets. It is perceived as a shape which, thanks to the softly rounded forms of the padding, can be put together to create dynamic and extremely comfortable modular arrangements. Rever is an extremely versatile sofa. The large day beds...

"Nemo" Black or Red Lacquered Head-Armchair by Fabio Novembre for Driade, 2017
By Fabio Novembre, Driade
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Nemo" is a polyethylene monobloc fixed or swivel iconic head-armchair, designed by Fabio Novembre and manufactured by Driade, available in black or red lacquered colors. Swivel version is for indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 32.6", W. 35.4", H. 53.1", Seat H. 16.1" FABIO NOVEMBRE uses furniture design to tell intense and fascinating stories in which the protagonist is often the human figure. This human figure is capable of becoming abstract and universal, able to propose a mythical beauty as occurred in Greek art. So that Nemo, a face with classic features, is hollowed out to create an inhabitable space. The result is a head-armchair to be lived from the inside. Like a mask, it simultaneously conceals and reveals its inhabitant. Fabio Novembre said about Nemo: "In 2010 it happened that the name "Nemo" immediately evoked the famous little fish, protagonist of the movie of the same name, made by Pixar in 2003. If this question had been asked at the end of the nineteenth century, the answer would have probably been Captain Nemo...

"Blocco" Black Mongolian Fur or Velvet Pouf Designed by Nanda Vigo for Driade
By Nanda Vigo, Driade
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Blocco" is a pouf, designed by Nanda Vigo and manufactured by Driade, with wooden frame and padding in polyurethane foam of varying density. Upholstery in black Mongolian fur or in Loira velvet. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 19.2", W. 17.3", H. 22.8", Seat H. 14.1" The “Blocco” seat / pouf, designed with such purpose in 1970, has got now a fresh re-edition with the same function but with a more joyful spirit by offering colorful covers. Have a nice seat! Nanda Vigo said about "Blocco": "Many elements called “furniture” are needed that actually remain “fixed”, once set, to the well-being. I've always rejected the tendency to overload space; therefore I have always worked to the limit of need." NANDA VIGO, born in Milan in 1936, lives in East Africa and works in Milan. She showed an interest in art at a very early age, when she had the opportunity to spend time with Filippo de Pisis, a family friend, and to study the architecture of Giuseppe Terragni, in which she immediately noticed the subtle employment of natural light. She studied architecture at the Ecole Polytechnique in Lausanne, worked as an intern in San Francisco, then returned to Italy where she opened her own studio in Milan. The underlying characteristic of the work has always been the relationship between light and space, which she has developed in a series of “environments” that blend architecture and design. In 1959 she began to visit the studio of Lucio Fontana and got to know that artists who founded the Azimut Gallery in Milan: Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani and Vincenzo Agnetti. During that period, she developed relations with the artists of the Zero group in Germany, the Netherlands and France, as a result of which her work was shown in more than 400 solo and group exhibitions throughout Europe. Between 1964 and 1966 she participated in some thirteen Zero exhibitions, including “Nul 65” at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and “Zero: An Exhibition of European Experimental Art” at the Modern Art Gallery in Washington D.C.. She was the curator of the legendary exhibition “Zero avantgarde” in 1965 in Fontana’s studio in Milan, at which some 28 artists were represented. In 1964 she created Utopie with Lucio Fontana for the Triennale. Again at the Triennale, in 1973 she organized a performance at which architects and artists freely intervened: it's considered to have been the first happening at the event. In 1974 she received the New York Award for the Industrial Design for the Golden Gate lamp...

Meridiana Chair in Transparent by Christophe Pillet for Driade
By Christophe Pillet, Driade
Located in Brooklyn, NY
The Meridiana table stems from the ultimate globetrotter chair, revised this year with solid wooden legs. An archetype of the coffee shop or domestic table, it displays a precious balance between the round, wood particleboard top and the solid wood frame and legs. A mass-colored clay mixture is smoothed over the top by hand with a scraper. The table’s aesthetic is distinguished by the shaded, handmade finish of its top. Available in the following colors: Volcano red, Lava black and Champagne. Born in 1959, he graduated from the Academy of Decorative Arts in Nice in 1985 and a year later took a post-graduate course at the Domus Academy in Milan. From 1986 to 1988 he worked with Martine Bedin in Milan, and from 1988 to 1993 with Philippe Starck in Paris. His first items of furniture, issued by XO, date from 1991. Since May 1993 he has been working as an independent designer. His work ranges from furniture to product design, from interior design to architecture and exhibit design. He works, among others, with Artelano, Cappellini, Ceccotti, JC Decaux, Driade, Mazzega, Moroso, Trussardi, Daum, Moët e Chandon, Ecart International, Lacoste Lancome, l’Oreal, Shiseido, Whirlpool. Nominated Creator of the Year in 1995, he has exhibited his works at the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Lucerne and at many other prestige venues. "Tokyo-Pop" White or Black Monobloc Sofa Designed by T. Yoshioka for Driade
By Driade, Tokujin Yoshioka
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Tokyo-Pop" is a white or black anthracite polyethylene monobloc iconic sofa, designed by Tokujin Yoshioka and manufactured by Driade. White version only is available in quick ship. Indoor and outdoor use. DIMENSIONS: D. 30.7", W. 69.5", H. 29.7", Seat H. 16.5" Tokyo-Pop collection was Tokujin Yoshioka's debut on the international design scene in 2002. Now he's considered as one of the masters of contemporary design. With his set of sofa, armchair and especially chaise longue and stool he seems to ignore the trivial qualities of rotational plastic molding and turn them into real sculptures featuring unforgettable and unusual forms.
