Wild Birds Lithographs by John J. Audubon, a Pair
Located in Pasadena, CA
Audubon was born on April 26, 1785, in Les Cayes, Saint Domingue, Hispaniola (a former French colony; now Haiti). He conducted his first scientific studies from his father's Pennsylvania estate. After trying and failing in several different business ventures, he concentrated on drawing and studying birds and began traveling around the country to pursue this work. He published his extraordinary four-volume Birds of America in London in 1827 and followed it up with several related works. He died in New York City in 1851. Despite some errors in field observations, he made a significant contribution to understanding bird anatomy and behavior through his field notes. Birds of America is still considered one of the most outstanding examples of book art, identifying 25 new species and 12 new subspecies. Audubon's place in history was assured by how he forever changed how birds were illustrated. While replicating physical features with uncanny veracity, he incorporated narrative elements and aesthetic touches that made birds come alive in their natural environments and lifted the images to the status of fine art. The first lithograph, "Wild Turkey Melleagris Gallopavo (Linn. Classification) Female and Young," captures the tender bond between a mother and her offspring. The lithograph, numbered nine and plate V and bearing the mark of Audubon's own hand, is a precise representation of the beauty and intricacy of nature. The second lithograph, "Ruffed Grouse...

3 Pairs of Tall Victorian Brass Candlesticks, England, circa 1830-1860
Located in New York, NY
This selection of baluster-stemmed Victorian brass candlesticks are all about 10" high. They represent the vast variety of design British brass casters brought to the much needed candle holders of the mid-19th century. The wider the bases, the safer the candlestick was from tipping over. The more elaborate the turned baluster stems, the more the candle flame reflected off the shinny brass stick. There is nothing more charming as groupings of candlesticks lining a fireplace mantel shelf...
