Ebonized Mahogany Tri-Level Round Coffee Table, Paul Laszlo, Brown Saltman LA
By Brown Saltman, Paul Laszlo
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Ebonized mahogany tri-level coffee table, attributed to Paul Laszlo, Brown Saltman Los Angeles, c. 1952.
A pioneering force in the evolution of California Modern, Paul László imbued the more rigid European modernism with plusher comfort and more sumptuous flair. Laszlo began his career in Stuttgart, an epicenter of modern design prior to WWII and gained international recognition for his sumptuous, sensual brand of modernism. His early fans included Salvador Dali and George Nelson.
Laszlo accepted a professorship in the US as a means of fleeing the Nazis (Two of his siblings and both his parents would die in the Holocaust). From New York, László drove cross-country to California, where he opened an office in Beverly Hills. Despite speaking hardly any English, his reputation preceded him, and he soon started receiving commissions, including remodeling and refurnishing Bullock’s on Wilshire Boulevard, the premier department store in Los Angeles. By the late 1930s László had become designer of choice to the Hollywood elite. Laszlo combined sleek geometric lines and rich woods together with novel materials and textures (ex. lucite and faux weaving), sometimes adding more traditional flourishes such as floral fabrics. His bold use of color was also a major attraction.
He opened his new design studio on North Rodeo Drive in 1941, which he would maintain for over 25 years.
In 1946, László furnished the residence of Rene Williams in Beverly Hills with designs that have become recognizable classics, such as the Paddle Armchairs, named for their flat, wide armrests. All the pieces from the grouping have clean, elegant lines that draw from Viennese Modern...

By Herman Miller, Zenith, Charles and Ray Eames
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Charles Eames (1907-1978) & Ray Eames (1912-1988) for Zenith Plastics / HermanMiller
DAR Eiffel rope-edge chair
Venice, California / Zeeland, Michigan, 1950
fiberglass, enameled steel
early sticker label
Measures: 24 7/8" W x 23 5/8" D x 31 3/8" H
All original parts, including rare first gen. feet, which date the piece to the first batch of production (1950). Labelled. Gorgeous museum worthy piece.
Quite possibly one of the most famous and iconic chairs ever, the Eames DAR would most commonly become known as the ‘eiffel chair’ due to its sculptured wire base resembling that of Europe’s most notorious landmark.
The very first generation of the Eames DAR Eiffel Chair was recognizable not only for the ‘rope edge’ shell but also due to the protruding ‘1st gen’ feet as opposed to boot glides or later plastic feet.
The abbreviated Eames DAR Chair stands for the Eames Dining (D) height, Arm (A) Chair, on Rod (R) Base released in the first year of arm chair production of the fiberglass series developed to the marketplace in 1950.
The early success of the Eames arm chairs, released in 1950, was a co-ordinated effort between the Eames . Office (Designers), Zenith Plastics (Manufacturers) and Herman Miller (Distributors). The chair series was always designed to have interchangeable bases and the DAR was one of the ‘original 5’ alongside the DAX X-base, LAR cats cradle...

Estelle & Erwine Laverne Originals Modern Rosewood Lamp Table Floor White 1950s
By Erwine & Estelle Laverne
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Estelle and Erwine Laverne for Laverne originals - Tulip base rosewood lamp table floor lamp. Maker’s mark on underside. Extremely rare example of a piece by E & E Laverne that includes wood of any sort (rosewood) alongside the non-traditional materials for which they are most known. I cannot underscore how exceptionally rare this piece is within the Estelle and Erwine’s oeuvre. It most probably dates from the between the years 1960-1961, as the weighted tulip base is reminiscent of their Champagne chair and the central table evocative of their cafe table that was a part of the Lily collection of the late 1950’s.
Dimensions: H 43.5 inches, W 11.75 inches, D 11.75 inches.
‘The Invisibles” by Elaine M. Salkaln (from the April 18, 2004 New York Times)
On the surface, this is a simple design story of a husband-and-wife team, Estelle and Erwine Laverne, who produced exceptionally beautiful, innovative midcentury-modern wallpapers, fabrics and furniture -- designs that are rare today, yet coveted by a few specialized dealers and aficionados.
But the story goes deeper -- to a convergence of culture, class, art and love. Sadly, though, the love gets caught up in the grittier details, transforming what would have been a grand romance into a modern American tragedy.
Were this a docudrama, it would begin with a scene from the filming of the sci-fi fantasy ''Men in Black II'': in the center of a glass-walled, ultramodern, living room swarming with cameramen, lighting and booms, a little dog jumps up and down on the seat of a tall, sensuously sculptured clear acrylic chair...

Ward Bennett Modern White 3078 I-Beam Table and Stool for Brickell, C. 1969, USA
By Geiger International, Ward Bennett
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Ward Bennett modern white 3078 I-beam occasional table for Brickel Associates, 1960s, USA.
Provenance: Brickel Associates; Property from a Private New York City Collection.
Measures: 15"H x 12"W x 12"D.
Bennett sought to create a design style that was uniquely American, versus the popular European design styles of the 1960s and 70's. His style was called "sensual minimalism" for his blending of industrial design and aesthetic look. He is considered one of the first designers to use industrial design and the industrial aesthetic in home design. Hailed by the American Institute of Architects, Bennett is credited as an American pioneer in the use of industrial materials for home furnishings – a prime example being his early ’60s I Beam Table, which employs a section of beam for a base.
Ward Bennett’s career began at age 13, when he quit school to work in New York’s Garment District. At 16 he went to Europe and continued working in fashion.
Despite attending art schools in Florence and Paris, he was mostly self-taught, with skills ranging from jewelry-making to interior design. “I learn from people,” he said, referencing influences including Georgia O’Keeffe.
Bennett eventually settled in New York, where his reputation earned him many high-profile clients. Lyndon Johnson later asked Bennett to design a chair for his presidential library—“a cross between a barroom chair and a courtroom chair...
