Paco Rabanne Monumental Space Curtain, Baumann AG, Switzerland, Italy, 1968

About the Item

Monumental custom space curtain, Paco Rabanne for Baumann AG, Switzerland, 1960s. 107” x 91”. Gorgeous glittery orange metal geometric curtain/room divider by Paco Rabanne. Made of thin plasticized metal plates (rare version with multiple shapes -- square, circle and triangle plates-- that create a diagonal design from a distance). Made in the same manner as his couture dresses of the 1960's. Each plate is individually connected to the next with small hooks. Stunning piece and at a monumental scale. Francisco Rabaneda Cuervo (born 18 February 1934), more commonly known under the pseudonym of Paco Rabanne is a Spanish fashion designer who became known as an enfant terrible of the 1960s French fashion world. Rabanne started his career in fashion by creating jewelry for Givenchy, Dior, and Balenciaga and founded his own fashion house in 1966. He used unconventional material such as metal, paper, and plastic for his metal couture and outlandish and flamboyant designs. For the debut of his namesake brand in 1966, he presented "Manifesto: 12 unwearable dresses in contemporary materials".

This monumental brutalist screen was privately commissioned in 1965 directly from the studios of Philip and Kelvin Laverne for a private residence in New Jersey. The interior of this residence was featured in the New York times as one of the most iconic interiors of the 1960s. The screen is comprised of 25 vertical rows of 5 elements with a total of 125 panels. All of the panels were handmade in the Laverne Studios in NY. Each individual 7x22" panel is unique. They were created by etching the panels with acid and then using a proprietary applied patina technique to create a distinct design on each one. This screen mounts to an anodized gold track allowing the panels to be rotated up to 180 degrees to allow for varying amounts of light to pass through. They can also be opened like a curtain. This extraordinary custom screen...
