1870s Transitional Plateau Rawhide Parfleche Envelope with Geometric Patterns
By Plateau Indians
Located in Denver, CO
A parfleche container in an envelope form, finely painted in an abstract design. Makes a stunning wall hanging alone or in a grouping with other parfleche or can be placed on a shelf or Stand.
This was created by a North American Indian living in the Plateau cultural area - encompassing portions of what is now northern Idaho, western Montana, northeast and central Oregon, eastern Washington and southeast British Columbia. The tribes from this region include Kalispel, Flathead, Kutenai, Palus, Coeur D'Alene and Nez Perce.
Parfleches are rawhide containers which were fundamental to the Plains way of life. Functioning essentially as protective travelling suitcases, they enabled the nomadic tribes to effectively pursue buffalo herds and migrate between seasonal camps. So critical were they to a nomadic existence that over 40 tribes are known to have historically produced parfleches. Collectively, these tribes inhabited an area which encompassed the entirety of the Plains, as well as the parts of the Southwest, the Transmontane and Western Plateau regions. Parfleches were, out of necessity, robust and versatile objects. They were designed to carry and protect within them anything from medicinal bundles to seasonal clothing or food. In fact, it was because of the containers’ robusticity and variety that parfleches earned their name in the Anglo world. Derived from parer (to parry or turn aside) and fleche (arrow), the word parfleche was coined by 17th century French Canadian voyageurs and used to describe indigenous objects made from rawhide. Despite their common utilitarian function, parfleches served as one of the major mediums through which Plains Indian tribes could develop their long-standing tradition of painting. In fact, it is in large part due to the parfleche that tribal style emerged. Even though parfleche painting developed simultaneously with beading and weaving, painting as an artistic tradition held particular importance in tribal culture. Believed to have evolved from tattooing, it had always been used as a conduit through which tribal and individual identity could be expressed. As such, many tribeswomen were deeply committed, some even religiously, to decorating their parfleche either with incised or painted motifs that were significant to them and/or the tribe. For some tribes, such as the Cheyenne, the decorative processes which surrounded parfleche production were sacred. For others, it seems that their parfleche designs shared an interesting artistic dialogue with their beadwork, indicating a more casual exchange of design motifs. This particular relationship can be seen in Crow parfleche...

Henry Hunt (1923-1985) First Nations Bear Carving Mask
Located in Garnerville, NY
Authentic First Nations wood carved mask by master carver, Henry Hunt (1923-1985). This hand carved gem depicts a Canadian Grizzly Bear. Pencil signed in cursive on the reverse, Henry Hunt. Carved out of Pacific Northwest pine. Hunt had a rich history replicating and also making one of a kind masks, figures and totems in the Kwakwaka'wakw tradition. This piece dates circa 1970-80.
Good overall condition with wear consistent with age. One minor ding near the eye (see photo). Dark patina. No visible splits.
Approximately 5" deep x 5.13" wide x 7" high.
Galleries West Bio:
In 1941, the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria opened Thunderbird Park on a small piece of land adjacent to the museum. Centred around the historic Helmcken House on the same site, it was a small but growing collection of authentic examples of northwest coast art — poles, grave markers, and other ceremonial carvings by the Haida, Songhees, Nuu-cha-nulth, and Kwakwaka’wakw people.
By the early 1950s, the carvings had started to decay, and the museum hired a carver to replicate the existing poles, and create new carvings based on original works from sites along the west coast. Kwakwaka’wakw chief Mungo Martin was hired as head carver, and he brought in his stepson, Henry Hunt, to assist him.
Based on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, the Kwakwaka’wakw carvers are known for poles and masks carved with traditional hand tools, faces and figures with theatrical expressions, and bright painting outlined in sharp contrast. Martin learned the art from his own stepfather, Charlie James...

Kwakiutl (Kwakwaka ‘wakw’) Northwest Coast America / Nootka
19th Century
SIZE: 20cm high - 8 ins high
PROVENANCE:
Adam Prout, UK
Ex Private collection
The elegant seated female figure holds her baby upon her knees, cradling the suckling infant’s head. The female figure displays a very distinctive ‘conical’ shaped hair-style, although the domed forehead, which was flattened artificially, was practiced by the Kosimo (Salish).
The Kwakiutl are one of several indigenous First Nations that inhabit the western coast of British Columbia, Canada, from central and northern Vancouver Island to the adjacent mainland coast.
The Kwakwaka'wakw, or ‘Kwak´wala-speaking people’, live along the Pacific Northwest coast of British Columbia. The tribes once numbered twenty-eighty, who lived on northern Vancouver Island and the adjacent mainland. They are known for the ‘potlatch’ ceremony which in Kwak'waka literally means ‘to give’. The ceremony marks all the important moments in the life of the Kwakwaka’wakw: birth, marriage and death in particular. It is a jubilant celebration organised by the chief of a tribe or a host, during which offerings are offered, masks exhibited and dances staged.
Much of our early knowledge about the Kwakiutl is attributed to Franz Boas...
