Frieze Week New York 2015

Frieze Week New York (May 13 - 17)

This week the global art world descends on New York as the Frieze Art Fair, held on Randall’s Island in a tent under the RFK Triborough Bridge, leads an impressive roster of shows. Frieze is synonymous with the best in contemporary art, offering works from more than 175 international galleries. Among the blue-chip 1stdibs dealers participating in the fair are Sikkema Jenkins & Co., Lehmann Maupin, Salon 94 and Paul Kasmin, which is presenting “a range of brand new sculpture and works across mediums, including photographs by Tina Barney,” according to the gallery's Danielle Mayer.

Beyond Frieze, Art Miami New York and NADA offer a mix of established and emerging artists at more accessible price points. Additionally, Collective, in the western reaches of Soho, presents premier examples of design, with a focus on 20th-century modernism, from Scandinavian craftsmanship to Italian postmodernism, as well as cutting-edge works by contemporary makers.

Whether or not you’re attending this week’s festivities, here you can browse — at a decidedly leisurely pace — our editors’ favorite pieces from 1stdibs dealers exhibiting at these shows.

'Robin' A Modern British Bronze Bird Sculpture. Wildlife & Nature Sculpture
By Richard Smith b.1955
Located in Shrewsbury, Shropshire
'Robin' is a stunningly elegant Bronze sculpture. Richard Smith conveys so much character in such simple lines, exemplifying a truly wonderful talent. The fantastic richly detailed graduated Patina really adds to the depth of the work. Richard Smith works as a part-time sculptor and a part-time gamekeeper on an estate in Hertfordshire, England. On seeing his sculptures the viewer cannot deny Smith's knowledge and love of the animals he creates. Each piece he creates he pays homage to nature and wildlife. Richard J. Smith was born in Luton, Bedfordshire, UK in 1955. He studied illustration at Luton School of Art to a high standard and graduated with a diploma in Technical & Scientific Illustration. He was soon offered a job as a medical artist at the John Radcliffe teaching hospital in Oxford. In 1978 he was painting for galleries as a full time artist with his depictions of wildlife. He has gained an international reputation for his work and is best known for his superb paintings of fish and water. He has exhibited at prestigious galleries such as the Tryon Gallery and W. H. Patersons in London, The Sportsman's Edge Gallery in New York, The Call of Africa in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and the Everard Reed Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa. Richard has exhibited his paintings at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum in the USA and the Natural History Museum and Tring Museum in Britain. He has sold at all the major auctions houses in London, such as Christie's, Sotheby's, Bonhams and Phillips. In the latter part of 2007, Richard was commissioned to produce several fish paintings, for the Sultan of Oman. Callaghan Fine Paintings has commissioned a series of fantastic animal pieces. Including life size bronze birds; the elusive Snipe sitting atop a fence post; and the beautiful Little Blue penguin, a native of New Zealand. His works are all studied from life whilst either out in the field or in a museum with taxidermy. With incredible attention to detail Richard has breathed fresh air into this medium. Edition of 25 'Robin' A Modern British Bronze...

Maestro (walnut wood bird abstract art zen sculpture pedestal minimal)
By Eric Tardif
Located in Quebec, Quebec
This steam-bent wooden sculpture is made of walnut with a granite base. The wood grain and the color are uniqueness of this sculpture. The wood has magnificent stripe patterns of paler and darker colors. One of them is to stay positive and keep hope. In some cultures, a heron symbolizes contemplation, vigilance, divine wisdom, and inner quietness. As a Chinese symbol, a heron represents strength, purity, patience and long life. In Africa, herons were thought to communicate with the Gods. The elegance and purity of the lines are reminiscent of Native American art from Western Canada. The elegance and purity of the lines are reminiscent of Native American art from Western Canada including that of Benjamin Chee...

Profils Horizontaux (20 men seated in a church, a hall, union or political?)
By Maurice Pasternak
Located in New Orleans, LA
Viewers are always curious about this image. I count 20 people seated -- all men. Why? Three of the men are looking over their shoulders toward the back. Are they impatient to see late arrivers? The seating seems to be pew like. Pasternak, like most artists, wants the viewer to bring their own interpretation to the image and is most circumspect to give an explanation. A church, a union hall, a political meeting -- which is it? The mood seems to be one of anxiety rather than celebration. The artist did answer why all men. He says that "he likes to create the tension of the image on the page. Putting women and men together...
