Frank Lloyd Wright's Ennis House, Los Angeles - Lithograph on Paper
Located in Soquel, CA
Frank Lloyd Wright's Ennis House, Los Angeles - Lithograph on Paper Clean, modern lithograph of the Ennis House in Los Angeles by Frances Myers (American, 1936-2014). The Ennis House sits at the top of a small hill, cutting a strong line against a soft peach-colored sky. Wright's strong sense of balance is highlighted in this composition, with patterns and lines guiding the viewers eye in various directions around the piece. Numbered, titled, signed and dated along the bottom edge: 7/50 Ennis House - Los Angeles Frances Myers 1980 Paper size: 29.5"H x 38"W Print size: 24"H x 32"W Shipped rolled in a tube. Myers was born on April 16, 1936, in Racine, Wisconsin. She began her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute, but soon transferred to the University of Wisconsin–Madison where she earned a BS in 1962, and an MFA in 1965. Myers employed a variety of printmaking techniques in her career including "relief, photo-etching, and mixed media processes." Myers is best known for her prints depicting various buildings. She once said, “I don’t want to invent a building, I want to bring new life to a building.” Growing up in Racine, Myers was exposed to many of Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural works, and she paid tribute to this in her 1980 work The Frank Lloyd Wright Print...

Leaf House
By Julie Blackmon
Located in Sante Fe, NM
Reviewing the photographs of Julie Blackmon, critic Leah Ollman of the Los Angeles Times wrote: “Each frame is an absorbing, meticulously orchestrated slice of ethnographic theater … that abounds with tender humor but also shrewdly subtle satire.” Blackmon is a native of Springfield, MO, and her photographs are inspired by her experience of growing up the oldest of nine children—including five sisters—in what she calls “a generic American town in the middle of the U.S.” In college, Blackmon was introduced to the work of artists Sally Mann, Diane Arbus, and Helen Levitt, and she describes herself as “obsessed” with their images. “When my three children were small,” she recalls, “we moved into an old house with a darkroom in the basement. Like any mother, I wanted to take pictures of my kids. But I didn’t want to be just the ‘mother photographer.’ I wanted my work to be more: more penetrating, more artful, more striking, more thoughtful, more a reflection of the times. “Over the next few years, I progressed from making documentary black and white photographs of my life and the lives of my sisters to creating colorful, fictitious images that offered a more fantastical look at everyday life. My work became more conceptual, as I began to realize that I was not obligated to capture “reality” exactly, but that I could work more like a painter or a filmmaker, actively shaping the images I was creating. This realization—that fiction can often capture the truth more memorably than reality—was a major shift in how I saw the world around me, and it transformed my work.” “It’s thrilling to see the most common aspects of everyday life as potential stories or themes for a photograph. It changes how you see things: suddenly, a Starbucks employee on a smoke break, or an outmoded beauty shop catering to an elderly clientele, can spark a memorable image. As Nora Ephron...

By Stephen Magsig
Located in Fairfield, CT
Represented by George Billis Gallery, NYC & LA -- Working with images he personally photographs, Magsig looks for crucial details in both the highlights and the shadows, in the brightness and obscurity of each scene. The artist says, "I get caught up in the mix of organic and non-organic human signs: the color of loaves of bread in an Italian bakery window, the reflections of facades in the car’s windshield, the abstracted angles of cornices and architectural detail."
