Anthony Thomas Triano Paintings

1928-1997

Anthony Thomas Triano was a painter, sculptor, illustrator and educator, with versatile and prolific talent. He is noted for his ability to embody the essence of humanity and nature upon large canvases, in terracotta sculptures and on jewel-like surfaces with monumentality. At the end of the Second World War, he enrolled at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art, where he studied under the GI Bill and became a friend and apprentice to the great sculptor Reuben Nakian. This affiliation presented an early sophistication and association with Jackson Pollack, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Charles Egan and other dynamic personalities of the greatest art adventure of the 20th century. True to the legacy of this experience, Triano devoted his life to the study and development of a significantly universal style. His creations are constantly evolving in such series as Each Day, The Wonders, Heaven and Earth, Geo, The Passions, A Sound of Angels, The Elegance of Women and The Olympians. His works have been exhibited in 37 one-man shows by galleries, corporations and museums, featured in publications and the subject of 12 television programs. His works are in private and public collections, including The Newark Museum of Art, Montclair Art Museum, Lowe Art Museum in Coral Gables, New York Lithographic Society, Abbott Laboratories, Greater Hartford Arts Council, Monmouth County Historical Association, Johnson and Johnson, The J.L. Hudson Company, House and Garden Magazine, Seton Hall University School of Law, the University of Alabama, William Paterson University, Wykeham Rise School, Golden Lemon on St. Kitts, Library of Congress and Wuhan University in the People's Republic of China. In 1971, Triano was appointed artist-in-residence at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, and became a full-time professor the following year. This position added a new dimension to his constant research, greatly increased his artistic powers and enabled him to extend his legacy to others.

Signed lower left: "Botkin". Henry Botkin (1896-1983) was a mid-century American modernist equally known as a painter, a collage artist, and for his work as a proponent of abstract art. Botkin’s oeuvre can be defined by three distinct styles—School of Paris Modernism, Cubism, and Abstract Expressionism. While each of the three styles is considered distinct, music can be seen as the common thread throughout his artistic output. In the 1930s, the impact of Gershwin’s opera “Porgy and Bess” is readily apparent in works such as Woman in Boat...
