Arnold Friedman Interior Paintings

American, 1874-1946
Modernist painter Arnold Friedman, was born in New York City. He did not study art until 1905, with Robert Henri at the Art Students League in New York City. He supported himself by working in the post-office. Eleven paintings by Arnold Friedman were shown in New York City in 2002 at the Berry-Hill Galleries in the exhibition, High Notes of American Modernism: Selections from the Tommy and Gill LiPuma Collection. Friedman's paintings appeared in two exhibitions in New York City in 2003, a one-man show at the Barbara Mathes Gallery, and a survey, American Art: 1750 to the Present, at the Richard York Gallery. A comprehensive 1986 exhibition of approximately one hundred eleven paintings and some watercolors and drawings was held at the Salander-O-Reilly Galleries in New York City. The show, Arnold Friedman (1874-1946): An Exhibition: Paintings, Drawings and Watercolors, gave rise to an extensive catalogue with an essay by critic Hilton Kramer. Arnold Friedman participated, from February 14-16, 1936, in the First Congress of American Artists against War and Fascism, in New York City. An extant publication records the essays of painters Stuart Davis and Peter Blume, photographer Margaret Bourke-White, sculptor Paul Manship and critic Lewis Mumford, among others, as well as the artists who attended, including painters Max Weber, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Jose Clemente Orozco, Harry Sternberg, Arnold Blanch and John Groth.

Artist: Arnold Friedman
Museum Piece #2 Art Lover in Museum Exhibition
By Arnold Friedman
Located in Miami, FL
Arnold Friedman studied with Robert Henri and Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League in 1905 . Yet as he developed his style he abandoned the academic influence of his teacher. He started experimenting with materials and techniques. Friedmans intimate style recalls a variety of post-impressionist artists such as Pointillism of Pisarro, Vuillard and Nabis, and perhaps even Seurat. His thick application of paint has definitive textual impasto that was influenced by his trip to Paris in 1909. In "Museum Piece...

Rare French, Paris 1935 Judaica Oil Painting Rabbis Studying S. Fleischman
Located in Surfside, FL
Rare Judaica Art. Jewish genre scene. In the tradition of Moritz Oppenheim, Isidor Kauffman and Maurycy Gottlieb and later of Tully Filmus, Zalman Kleinman and Itshak Holtz the artist captures this Jewish scene with a particular sensitivity. Part of the Ecole De Paris The term "School of Paris" was used in 1925 by André Warnod (fr) to refer to the many foreign-born artists who had migrated to Paris. School of Paris artists were progressively marginalized. Beginning in 1935 art publications no longer wrote about Marc Chagall, just magazines for Jewish audiences, and by June 1940 when the Vichy government took power, School of Paris artists could no longer exhibit in Paris at all. The artists working in Paris between World War I and World War II experimented with various styles including Cubism, Orphism, Surrealism and Dada. Foreign and French artists working in Paris included Jean Arp, Joan Miró, Constantin Brâncuși, Raoul Dufy, Tsuguharu Foujita, artists from Belarus like Michel Kikoine, Pinchus Kremegne, and Jacques Lipchitz, the Polish artist Marek Szwarc and others such as Russian-born prince Alexis Arapoff. A significant subset, the Jewish artists, came to be known as the Jewish School of Paris or the School of Montparnasse. The "core members were almost all Jews, and the resentment expressed toward them by French critics in the 1930s was unquestionably fueled by anti-Semitism." One account points to the 1924 Salon des Indépendants, which decided to separate the works of French-born artists from those by immigrants; in response critic Roger Allard (fr) referred to them as the School of Paris. Jewish members of the group included Emmanuel Mané-Katz, Chaim Soutine, Adolphe Féder, Chagall, Moïse Kisling, Maxa Nordau...
