Bartolome Sastre Figurative Drawings and Watercolors

Spanish, b. 1947

Bartolome Estades Sastre, called Tomeo by his friends, currently resides in Palma de Mallorca. He was in one of the last graduating classes of the Mediterranean School of Arts headed by Joaquin Torrents Llado. He also studied with the Catalan painter Charles Got.

Having more than 20 shows to his credit, the most important thing to Sastre is not the show but the finished work. Showing his finished products is the part of being an artist that Sastre loves. His work was received with critical acclaim by way of a silver medal in 1985 in Palma's Salon de Otono exhibition and circa 1991 a prize known as "Tall de Vermadors de Binissalem." He was also selected to show his work in the biannual Paintings of Baleares.

In Sastre's work we perceive something more than mere nostalgia, but a sensation of the immediate. The subject of choice, Mallorca and the Mediterranean, is what Sastre captures in his works. Something that pertains to his life like a palpable reality: the Mallorca that Adam Diehl imagines in the garden of the Fomentor Hotel; the Mallorca that Robert Graces and Adam Silltoe yearned for in the unending evening vigils of wine and poetry; the Mallorca that Jorge Luis Borges dreamed of as he wrote his poetry from the Grand Hotel. It is a pleasure to view Sastre's thoroughly explored landscape paintings that harmonize nature's darks and lights. The allurement of the mirror quality he gives his reflections brings a calm over the senses; a fleeting moment captured in oil.

The Body is a History - Muscular Male Nude, Graphite Drawing on Paper
By Rick Sindt
Located in Chicago, IL
Rick Sindt's knowledge of the male physique is evident in this exquisite drawing of a nude male. The subject sits on the ground with his body twisted away from the viewer. We see the defined musculature of his posterior. The artwork is framed in white wood with a black mat. Rick Sindt The Body is a History graphite on archival paper 12h x 9w in 30.48h x 22.86w cm RIS026 Shifting the historic male gaze into a male-on-male gaze, this body of work anchors its exploration of queer culture in relationships and introspection. Beginning with a survey of several photo archives, I overwhelmingly encountered pictures that fit into two distinct categories: spectacular demonstrations or public displays of sexuality. All of these images were overtly political. Then, I began to find a subset of more intimate images. Typically, these were images submitted by loved ones or donated to foundations after someone’s death. These images depicted common, tender scenes. Working my way through these images, I reflected on D. A. Miller’s assertion that gay identity, to which we have entrusted our politics and ethics, stands in an essentially reductive relation to the queer desires on which it is based. And David Halperin’s argument that, “identity has become the preferred category for thinking about homosexuality. Moreover, it has been promoted at the direct expense of pleasure or feelings or subjectivity.” This left me asking the questions: how is queer culture transmitted if not genealogically? Is there a universal queer experience? What is queer sensibility and subjectivity and can it be visually represented? At the Shore
Located in Atlanta, GA
"My work principally consists of deeply abstracted figure compositions--intuitive constructions that begin with random marks establishing larger masses of torsos, heads, and limbs in an undefined setting. The emphasis is almost purely on intuition. The figures are born of their surrounding environment, emerging only partially and fugitively from the layers of pigment. A narrative is evident but never overt. A crown, a shield, a boat, a wheel. Though the subject has recently coalesced around my reading of Dante and Shakespeare, the settings remain extremely vague- a beach, an interior, a woodland. The paintings are, in the end, meditations on the relationship between the protagonists in a wordless drama. In my paintings, I use a cold wax medium combined with dry pigments, oil paint, and embedded fragments of burlap. The surfaces eventually build up into a dense, rugged terrain." --Thaddeus Radell
