It depicts the entryway of a brightly lit Asian bar...

Bertha Lum was fascinated by the legends and mythology of the Orient and wrote extensively about them. These legends provided the subject matter for many of her works in woodcut. Bertha Boynton Lum was an American artist known for helping popularize the Japanese and Chinese woodblock print outside of Asia. In May 1869, Lum was born as Bertha Boynton Bull in Tipton, Iowa. Lum's father was Joseph W. Bull (1841–1923), a lawyer and her mother was Harriet Ann Boynton (1842–1925), a school teacher. Both of Lum's parents were amateur artists. Lum had a sister and two brothers, Clara, Carlton, and Emerson. Education and career: In 1890 she lived in Duluth and listed her occupation as artist. She enrolled in the design department of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1895. A few years later she studied stained glass with Anne Weston and attended the Frank Holme School of Illustration. From November 1901 to March 1902, she studied figure drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago and was influenced by the Japanese techniques of Arthur Wesley Dow in his book Composition, which was published in 1899. Lum married Burt F. Lum, a corporate lawyer from Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1903. They spent their seven-week honeymoon in Japan, where she searched for a print maker who could teach her the traditional ukiyo-e method. Toward the end of her stay in Japan, she found a shop that reproduced old prints. The shop sold her some woodcutting tools...

Israeli Judaica Watercolor Gouache Bar Mitzvah Boy Rabbi Painting Russian Artist
By Ben Zion Magal
Located in Surfside, FL
Ben Zion Magal (1908 - 1999) Ben Zion Magal was born in 1908 in Kishinev - Russia and there, years later, graduated from the Art Academy. He arrived to Erertz Israel together with his wife Chaya, an artist in her own right, in 1933 and settled in Haifa. He brought with him artistic talent, experience and memories from his father's home and of the warm charm of the "Jewish shtetl". In order to survive, as an artist, in mandatory Palestine, one had to be a tough person. Magal, as many others had to create in a cultural desert and material poverty, without support of museums, galleries or any institutional backing. They started literally from scratch. Together with other Haifa artists, he founded the Haifa Association of Artists. Later he was one of the first members of the Israel Association of Painters and Sculptors and was among the founders of the artistic village Ein - Hod, near Haifa. Magal's style is mainly impressionistic. The Israeli landscape is the main topic in his paintings. The composition of the beautiful Israeli landscape, the desert and the oriental aspects are strongly expressed in the sunlight of the land. In this he follows the main trend of Israeli painters who saw, from the beginning, the landscape as one of the most important subjects. Magal's other topic, deals with Jewish life and tradition in the East European "shtetl". He brings on the canvas his childhood memories of the "school", the Carter, tailor and poultry vendor. These paintings bind him to the Jewish painters who bequeathed to the following generations, an artistic expression of the Jewish tradition and way of life that was so violently terminated and does not exist any more.
