Broyhill Furniture

American

Founded during the 1920s, the Broyhill Furniture Company was one of the stalwart North Carolina makers of mid-priced, traditional wooden furnishings, and it served American families well. The Colonial Revival style — chairs with turned legs, beds with split pediment headboards — had always been the company’s stock in trade. But the vintage Broyhill bedroom furniture, dressers and cabinets of the postwar era are quite popular with today’s fans of mid-century modern design — particularly those who enjoy more flamboyant stylings, such as those of Adrian Pearsall.

For collectors of a certain type, Broyhill is most admired for its brief foray into the contemporary furnishings of the late 1950s and ‘60s. In 1957, responding to changing tastes, the firm launched its Broyhill Premier line with the Sculptra series.

Sculptra pieces featured decorative molding with a square-within-a-square motif and horizontal cat’s eye-shaped drawer pulls. Five years later, Broyhill introduced the Brasilia furniture group, inspired by the Oscar Niemeyer architecture for the brand-new Brazilian capital. The collection made its debut at the Seattle World’s Fair.

The cabinet door fronts of vintage Broyhill Brasilia pieces feature moldings based on the sweeping colonnades and parabolic curves of such buildings as the Palácio da Alvorada (“Palace of the Dawn”), the presidential residence. As you will see on 1stDibs, Broyhill created a striking and spirited line of furnishings that will make a happy keynote in any Atomic Age-inspired interior.

Ohio retailer Big Lots acquired the rights to the Broyhill name and related trademarks in 2019.

Raymond Loewy Inspired Green Chapter One Dry Bar Buffet by Broyhill Premier
By Broyhill, Raymond Loewy
Located in Chattanooga, TN
The Chapter One Server (model 6316-05) is a fabled unicorn. Broyhill's Chapter One line has acquired a cult following over the last decade. This Server / Dry bar is the first (and most likely last) one we've had our hands on in 15 years, and it's not for lack of hunting. Trust us when we say, you won't find another one anywhere, and if you do, it won't be fully restored like this show pony. Broyhill’s Chapter One Collection is officially harder to find and more sought after than the Raymond Loewy originals. With all due respect to Raymond Loewy, there really is something magical about the Chapter One line. Maybe they’re just more fun and approachable. Maybe it’s the proportions and practicality. Regardless, they’re one of our favorite collections of all time. The restoration team pulled no punches on this Chapter One Green Server / Dry-Bar, and the end result exceeded our expectations. Every inch of painted wood was professionally sanded primed and painted to match the original bright white. The laminate top and green molded plastic door / drawer fronts were finally buffed and polished to a glassy shine. It’s tough to see this one go, but we know it will be loved. Broyhill’s Chapter one collection borrowed from the plastic mold injection designs made famous by legendary designer Raymond Loewy. Like Loewy, this Chapter One Green Server employs the futuristic use of color and materials in a way that had not been seen before. The bright green plastic captures the playful spirit of the 1970s. The cabinet is supported by four steel casters that roll with ease. Three hinged doors with towel racks and wood bottle holders, conceal adjustable shelves. Of course this gem is finished on the back with a giant inset green panel framed in the curved white wood. This colorful, curvaceous case-good could have blended in nicely on the set of 2001 A Space Odyssey. The space-age look has never been more desirable, which may help explain the recent scarcity of all things Chapter One. Chapter One green credenza original catalog description: Broyhill’s Chapter One is the beginning of a new era in furniture design and technology. It emphasizes the use of new materials, new shapes and new finish concepts. Chapter One uses plastic for design as well as durability. The fronts are of “Cycolac” polymer, the tops are of newly developed Pionite high gloss laminate, pedestal tulip bases of spun steel. Curved wood areas of select tupelo veneers with cabinet hardwoods are the result of advanced woodworking technology. The bright lacquer finish was especially blended for Chapter One. The House & Garden colors are impregnated into the plastic so that the brilliant colors are completely through the Cycolac. All this plus the outstanding Premier features that are standard in Chapter One, make it one of the most outstanding furniture values...

Pair of Raymond Loewy Inspired Green Chapter One Nightstands by Broyhill Premier
By Broyhill, Raymond Loewy
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Why are the green drawer fronts different tones? Good question. Nightstand "B" was acquired singularly over two years ago and we vowed to wait patiently until a mate turned up. And yes, we're fanatical about Chapter One. Finally one did, but "Nightstand A" was probably close to a window for many decades and the sun faded the green plastic just a touch. The difference is only slightly noticeable, especially when considering that both nightstands were fully re-painted in white lacquer, so they're a perfect match otherwise. Now that you know the exciting backstory, here are the details......... Well it’s 2022, and Broyhill’s Chapter One Collection is officially harder to find and more sought after than the Raymond Loewy orginals. With all due respect to Raymond Loewy, there really is something magical about the Chapter One line. Maybe they’re just more fun and approachable. Maybe it’s the proportions and practicality. Regardless, they’re one of our favourite collections of all time. The restoration team pulled no punches on these nightstands, and the end result exceeded our expectations. Each cabinet is supported by a white lacquered, curved plinth base that compliments the overall form of the nightstands. Two wide drawers roll-out on metal glides that have been adjusted and oiled to allow for easy functionality, and proper spacing. Red / Orange "Bittersweet" Chapter One Drawer End Table by Broyhill Premier
By Broyhill, Raymond Loewy
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Well it's 2022, and Broyhill's Chapter One Collection is officially harder to find and more sought after than the Raymond Loewy orginals. With all due respect to Raymond Loewy, there really is something magical about the Chapter One line. Maybe they're just more fun and approachable. Maybe it's the proportions and practicality. Regardless, they're one of our favourite collections of all time. And to make it all that much sweeter (wink wink), this is the first red/orange "Bittersweet" piece we've ever had. This particular model, the "6317-14 Drawer End Table" was one of only a few Chapter One pieces to be offered in this color. After 12 years and several yellows and greens, the red / orange, known by their catalog description as "Bittersweet" has evaded us until now. Once in our grasps, the restoration team pulled no punches, and the end result exceeded our expectations. Every inch of painted wood and metal was professionally sanded primed and painted to match the original bright white. The laminate top and molded plastic drawer front was finally buffed and polished to a glassy shine. It's tough to see this one go, but we know it will be loved.
