Charles Hinman Drawings and Watercolor Paintings
American, b. 1932
Charles Hinman (born 1932) is an American artist renowned for pioneering the use of three-dimensional shaped canvases. Born in Syracuse, New York, Hinman attended Syracuse University, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1955. He initially pursued a career as a professional baseball player before an arm injury led him to focus fully on art.
Hinman gained recognition in the mid-1960s for his innovative use of shaped canvases, which explore the interplay between real and illusory space. His works, often characterized by their geometric, sculptural forms, project from the wall and create a dynamic interaction between light, color, and shadow. This fusion of painting and sculpture places him at the forefront of Minimalism and shaped-canvas art movements. His early exhibitions at the Sidney Janis Gallery and his first solo show at Richard Feigen Gallery in 1964 helped establish his reputation.
Throughout his career, Hinman’s works have been included in prominent exhibitions and acquired by major institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He has also been the recipient of prestigious awards, such as a Guggenheim Fellowship and multiple Pollock-Krasner Foundation grants.
In recent years, his works continue to be celebrated for their exploration of dimensionality and form, with exhibitions like "The Shaped Canvas Revisited" in 2014 reaffirming his influence on modern artto

On Hansen originally from Scandinavia is the pseudonym used by the photographer Cristian Hunter, a third-generation artist who has spent most of his professional career as a photographer. His work bears the traces of lived experiences, exploring the possibilities of formal abstraction, and seeking an organic experience between space and time through painting and photography.
“There is no longer a single idea explaining everything, but an infinite number of essences giving meaning to an infinite number of objects. The world comes to a stop, but also lights up.”

Artist’s statement :
"Painting, for me, is an expressive endeavor in which one depicts the evolution of the various facets of the artistic self. There is, on each canvas, a tension where violence and stillness naturally coexist. By playing with different materials, I seek to establish a sort of unexpected dialogue between these states, and aspire to express this tension through profusion of color.
The canvas is the stage that allows me to unite narration with the action of painting the fantastic—even the outrageous---and the everyday. I develop scenarios borrowed from the imagination, which join fantasy, even fables, with the everyday. Pulling threads from each domain, I bring together the mythical and the quotidian, so that the worlds of reality and fantasy merge.
I rely on “creatures,” improbable little characters that could exist in some other realm or dimension. They materialize, issuing forth from the surprising, unbelievable and wondrous world of childhood. Human or animal, both find themselves entangled in inextricable and melancholic situations. These inextricable situations create distance; the humor comes through this breach. It is the absurdity of their predicaments that manifests the humor in the work.
In each of my paintings, the sentiments are heightened by an intentional, provocative tone that transforms the work. An Otherness is attributed to objects; objects become personified, and by their very presence, they become witnesses or guinea pigs torn between and bound to their dilemma.
The titles of my paintings, whether invented or quotations taken out of context, come from literature, theater, or song lyrics.
Accident and chance are often major actors in my work.”

Charles Hinman’s paintings are explorations into the boundaries of abstraction through elaborate three-dimensional wood structures created with mathematical precision. Challenging his abstract expressionist predecessors, Hinman spearheaded the development of 1960s and 70s Abstract Minimal art by utilizing hard-edged canvases to move painting from a two-dimensional illusory space to a three-dimensional real space. What set Hinman apart from other contemporaries was his use of color, light, and time as his paintings reflect their hue onto the surrounding surface across varying levels of light. This juxtaposition places Hinman’s work at the intersection of the ideas explored by artists Frank Stella, Ellsworth Kelly, Barnett Newman, Al Loving, Dan Flavin, and James Turrell.
The New American Abstraction 1950-1970, Claudine Humblet states about Hinman's work:
"From the very beginning of Hinman's adventure of construction […] the aim of the first structures was to address the challenge of inertia and the force of gravity, sometimes connected with the interpretation of the aesthetics of "primary structures" (structures by Donald Judd, Soll LeWitt, Robert Morris, and Robert Smithson were included alongside shaped works by Hinman, Insley and Sven Lukin in Art In Process. The Visual Development of a Structure, organized by the Finch...
