Chaya Vance Landscape Paintings

American, Israeli, b. 1953
I am always observing, choosing to focus on the beauty in everything which surrounds me. As in life, I strive to take a “negative” and turn it into a positive. I am the daughter of Holocaust survivors. I aspired to be an artist from a young age, but a survivor’s reality influenced me to search for practical applications. Following graduation with a BFA from Boston University, I joined Jasmine Advertising, specializing in Entertainment Portfolios, while simultaneously doing freelance photography for modelling portfolios. In the early 1980’s,, I designed album covers which led me to produce Rock & Roll, Reggae and Children’s Albums. Although I was very successful, I was searching. In 1985 I moved to Taos, New Mexico, where I was enchanted by the unique light and the legendary artists, photographers and writers, whose energy could still be felt: Georgia O'Keeffe, Paul Strand, and D. H. Lawrence. My heart felt alive in the high-altitude environment. The air, light and lore of New Mexico took hold of me. I opened a Bed & Breakfast “Casa de Milagros”, which became a meeting place for local artists. I began to promote Native American Artists as well as exhibiting my photography in a number of Taos Exhibitions. I was one of the few “Anglo” photographers who was allowed to photograph at the annual Taos Pueblo Pow-Pow’s and was intrigued by the unfamiliar customs. (In general, they did not permit to be photographed, especially by tourists) Unexpectedly, in 1993 my life changed forever. I was honored to participate in a select tour with the New Mexico Council of Photography through the waterways between Moscow and St. Petersburg. After an unplanned detour through Greece, Rhodes and Cypress, I wound up on the shores of Haifa for one of the most beautiful and inspirational sunrises I had ever seen. I travelled to Jerusalem and had an epiphany at the Western Wall. I was taken by the image of my own people praying at the wall, and busloads of tourists coming to see them. It was a parallel to what I saw, while having so much reverence for the ancient Native American Ceremonies of which I was privileged to photograph in New Mexico. Suddenly I had a new found appreciation for my own people’s way of life. My oxygen became the air of Jerusalem and I felt I could not live without it. The physical light that I loved in New Mexico, suddenly paled in comparison to the physical and spiritual light in Israel. Ready to finally settle down, I was introduced to my husband, Ronny Vance who spent a lifetime in the record business and was the catalyst for many hit records by renowned musicians including Tupac Shakur, Eric Clapton, Gwen Stephanie, Bruce Hornsby, Michael Sembello. We moved to Israel in 1998, settled in Jerusalem and have adapted to our new way of observant life.

Edward Avedisian ( 1936-2007 ) 7 X 13 Oil paint on wood panel with pink, red and green abstract. This is not signed on front. It bears his name verso. Provenance: Hudson, N.Y. estate of noted Art Collector Albert Burnette Roberts (1932-2021) Edward Avedisian (June 15, 1936, Lowell, Massachusetts – August 17, 2007, Philmont, New York) was an American abstract painter who came into prominence during the 1960s. His work was initially associated with Color field painting and in the late 1960s with Lyrical Abstraction and Abstract Expressionism. He studied art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. By the late 1950s he moved to New York City. Between 1958 and 1963 Avedisian had six solo shows in New York. In 1958 he initially showed at the Hansa Gallery, then he had three shows at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery and in 1962 and 1963 at the Robert Elkon Gallery. He continued to show at the Robert Elkon Gallery almost every year until 1975. During the 1960s his work was broadly visible in the contemporary art world. He joined the dynamic art scene in Greenwich Village, frequenting the Cedar Tavern on Tenth Street, associating with the critic Clement Greenberg, and joining a new generation of abstract artists, such as Darby Bannard, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski, and Larry Poons. Avedisian was among the leading figures to emerge in the New York art world during the 1960s. An artist who mixed the hot colors of Pop Art with the cool, more analytical qualities of Color Field painting, he was instrumental in the exploration of new abstract methods to examine the primacy of optical experience. One of his paintings was appeared on the cover of Artforum, in 1969, his work was included in the 1965 Op Art The Responsive Eye exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art and in four annuals at the Whitney Museum of American Art. His paintings were widely sought after by collectors and acquired by major museums in New York and elsewhere. He has been exhibited in prominent galleries, such as the Anita Shapolsky Gallery and the Berry Campbell...
