Artist: Do Byung-Kyu
Ocean without a Shore (Black)
By Do Byung-Kyu
Located in New York, NY
The medium of choice for Do Byung-Kyu, born in Cheonan, Korea, is dolls: they are both his conceptions and his physical expression. At the same time dolls are also the perfect tool for communicating the artist’s inner self. Expressing himself by means of dolls liberates Do from the restrictions of the mundane world. By embodying in the form of dolls his actions and thoughts, dreams and desires, and even the instincts lying in the depths of the subconscious, he transcends the secular boundaries. Dolls are his alter ego, his other self that he can construct precisely the way he wants. Sublimating the experiences and memories from his youth into various subjects of desire, Do uses dolls to paint a descriptive picture of the ambiguous feelings of contradictions from his childhood when he would abuse and kill a plaything, for example a frog, then bury the body in solemn mourning over its death. These sexual or violent games from his childhood are not likely to be limited to Do’s experiences alone. Most of us can vaguely remember indulging in sadistic acts of sexual love against a doll. Rising above a child’s simple curiosity, it is an intuitive game of the senses we play by ourselves. In a number of Do’s paintings, sticky liquid can be observed dripping down a doll’s face. This brings back recollections of the life inside our mothers’ womb where we were also enveloped by mucous waters, like the amniotic fluid. It refuses contact with the anything, and nothing wants to touch it either. The shape of such a mucous liquid is a protective layer sheltering the intrinsic identity and desires of man. It is also a substitution that satisfies the ego’s instincts otherwise suppressed by social norms. The dolls’ eyes...

"Ingredients" (2024) By Nadezda, Original Oil Surrealist Portrait Painting
Located in Denver, CO
Nadezda's beautiful new oil on panel painting "Ingredients" (2024) is a surrealist portrait of a young woman, dressed in Russian-inspired clothing and resting curiously during the night beside a plume of mushrooms, among a surreal field of spirits. Behind her, flying away is the spirit of a woman and a cat, and in front float two clay faces among the peonies.
Nadezda is a painter, sculptor, photographer, and concept artist. Her artwork is focused on narratives carefully gathered from the hidden chambers of her imagination as well as live theater-inspired work with actors, dancers, and models. Like a quilt stitched of poetic realities, Nadezda’s mysterious world defies the mundane. With a non-linear creative process flowing between different media, the artist explores various vantage points in her creations. This dynamic approach inspires her mind’s eye to focus on the worlds within and evoke an uninterrupted, creative transmission which is then channeled through her paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, writing and film.

"Where The Swamps Sing" (2024) By Nadezda, Original Oil Surrealist Painting
Located in Denver, CO
Nadezda's beautiful new oil on panel painting "Where The Swamps Sing" (2024) is a surrealist Slavic portrait of a woman dressed in traditional Russian clothing, standing stoically in front of a bizarre scene, with iconography of demons' heads towered up with a cat resting atop it, deep in an abstracted symbolic forest.
"Red Shoes" (2024) By Nadezda, Original Surrealist Oil Portrait Painting
Located in Denver, CO
Nadezda's beautiful new oil on panel painting "Red Shoes" (2024) is a surrealist portrait of a young woman wearing a Russian dress, posed impossibly among a strange arrangement of objects at varying perspectives. Among these are living things like a spirit resting on the bed, and a small humanoid figure wearing a mask.
