Doris Warner Sculptures

American, 1925-2010
Doris Ann Warner began as an Abstract Expressionist painter, but was primarily known for stone carving as well as abstract female figures, which emphasized body movement through rhythmic flow of mass and line. Warner studied at the University of California Santa Cruz as well as Pietrasanta, Italy, with Professor Pasquale Martini in 1988. First achieving recognition as an abstract expressionist painter, Doris Warner discovered the world of stone carving and returned to the university for instruction in sculpting the three dimensional form. A journey to Pietra Santa, Italy, (The Mecca of sculptors), gave her a month with the Italian professor, Pasquale Martini, experiencing the Italian method of stone carving. She returned with three tons of marble and worked exclusively in that medium. The impressions and images gathered from extensive travel in Europe, Asia and Africa have inspired recent works. One of the architectural wonders of the world, The Great Stupa of Borabudur, Java, was the source of inspiration for a series of five sculptures. The five sculptures are not intended to be specifically architectonic in form and yet there is an unequivocal sense of history – frozen in time. The mysterious quality of the temple carvings are translated into bronze icons (lost-wax process) and placed on the carved marble. In addition, Doris focuses on abstracted female figures which emphasize body movement through rhythmic flow of mass and line. She usually sculpted in a series, reworking the same concept until it has been expressed as powerfully as possible. Cigar Store Indian, Early 20th Century, Carved Wood With Polychrome Decoration
Located in Cotignac, FR
A 20th Century wood carved male figure, a 'Cigar Store Indian' with original polychrome decoration. A now controversial subject, but none the less charming rendition, of a native North American man originally probably used as an advertising figure. Wonderful quality of carving capturing the stance of the man looking out to the distance, hair flowing to his back and plait to the side, all the details of his costume, his native dress and hairpipe breastplate (suggesting he is possibly a Comanche) and chest ornament, apron, trousers, mocassins, shield and arrows. The original Polychrome decoration has weathered beautifully as has the wood itself to present a sculpture that would adorn any collection or interior. Because of the general illiteracy of the populace, early store owners used descriptive emblems or figures to advertise their shops' wares. American Indians and tobacco had always been associated because American Indians introduced tobacco to Europeans. As early as the 17th century, European tobacconists used figures of American Indians to advertise their shops. Because European carvers had never seen a Native American, these early cigar-store "Indians" looked more like Africans with feathered headdresses and other fanciful, exotic features. These carvings were called "Black Boys" or "Virginians" in the trade. Eventually, the European cigar-store figure...

Pair of Italian "Alabaster Stone Lions" after Antonio Canova; Mid 19th Century
Located in SANTA FE, NM
"Pair Recumbent Stone Lions" after Antonio Canova (1757-1822) Italian (possibly Florence) Mid 19th Century Alabaster, marble 6 x 9 x 4 inches This is an exquisite pair of Italian alabaster lions on marble bases based on the monumental lions carved by Antonio Canova (1757-1822), the greatest Italian neoclassical sculptor. Canova sculpted the marble lions for the monumental tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St. Peter’s, Rome in 1792 Canova Lions refers to the pair of copies of lion sculptures by Antonio Canova. When Canova created the sculptures in 1792, he installed them on the tomb of Pope Clement XIII. The marble sculptures are some of the most prominent features in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Given the intricacies of creating the original Canova lions, some artists created molds and replicated them. A good example is the pair of lion sculptures...
